MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Senior
Sammi O'Connor threw a no-hitter leading Albright to a 6-1 victory over Hunter in the Lions opening game of the Fastpitch Dreams Tournament at North Myrtle Beach Park on Sunday.
While O'Connor carried the Lions in their opening game, the Albright offense exploded in game two as it defeated Sarah Lawrence 14-3 behind
Stephanie Pomante who was 3-for-3 with four runs batted in.
O'Connor became the first Albright pitcher to throw a no-hitter since Allie Frank tossed a no-hitter against Rosemont on April 16, 2013. It marks the first no-hitter for O'Connor in her Albright career.
O'Connor dominated the Hawks as she struck out 13 batters in her 7.0 innings of work. She walked two batters and the Lions committed two errors behind her, which prevented her from pitching a perfect game.
O'Connor got all the offense she would need in the bottom of the second inning of game one when the Lions scored four runs.
Regina Milburn led off the inning being hit by a pitch and advanced to second when
Stephany Courtney followed with a base hit. After a pair of pop ups,
Madison Bear delivered an RBI single to plate Milburn with the first run of the game.
Kelly Cembrale upped the lead to 2-0 when she singled up the middle to score Courtney.
Armida Roman produced a clutch two-out single that scored Cembrale and Bear to increase the Lions lead to 4-0.
Albright tacked on two runs in the sixth inning when Milburn delivered a two-run single that scored
Jordan Chell and
Brianne Long.
While the first game was dominated by O'Connor, game two against Sarah Lawrence was dominated by the Lions offense. Albright banged out 15 hits and used an 11-run second inning to blow the game wide open.
O'Connor also added three hits for the Lions, while Chell had two hits and scored a pair of runs. Cembrale, Long, Roman, Courtney, Bear,
Corinne Garuffe and
Stefanie Braciszewski each had base hits for the Lions.
Riley Gerenda benefited from the Albright offensive explosion as she improved to 2-1 on the season by allowing three runs in 6.0 innings while striking out seven.
Albright, which improved to 3-1 on the season, will continue tournament play on Monday (March 14) when it faces Principia at 11:30 a.m. and Wisconsin-Stout at 1:30 p.m.
