MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. --
Riley Gerenda and
Sammi O'Connor each threw a shutout and Albright extended its winning streak to six straight with victories over Spalding and Eureka on Tuesday at the Fastpitch Dreams Tournament at the North Myrtle Beach Complex.
The Lions opened the day with a 1-0 victory over Spalding behind Gerenda and then defeated Eureka 2-0 behind O'Connor.
Gerenda allowed six hits and struck out two batters to improve to 3-1 on the season. She worked out of trouble in the bottom of the fifth inning after allowing back-to-back singles to Shelby Kilgore and Alyssa McAfee. She got a pair of comebackers to escape the inning without any damage being done.
Albright got all the offense it would need in the fourth inning.
Kelly Cembrale led off the inning by reaching first on a Spalding fielding error. One out later,
Armida Roman ripped a double to right that plated Cembrale with the only run of the game.
Roman,
Regina Milburn,
Stephanie Pomante,
Corinne Garuffe and
Madison Bear all notched base hits for the Lions.
O'Connor, who improved to 4-0 on the season, dominated Eureka. She allowed just four hits in 7.0 innings and struck out 13 batters. It marked the third time this season that the senior has reached double figures in strikeouts and the second time she has posted 13 strikeouts.
She worked out of trouble in the sixth inning after Eureka loaded the bases with two outs by striking out clean-up hitter Lexi Litwiller to retire the side.
O'Connor also got help from her defense when Kerggian Dura tripled in the fourth inning and tried to stretch it into an inside-the-park home run, but she was gunned down at the plate by
Brianne Long.
Albright broke through in the bottom of the fourth inning. O'Connor drew a walk and
Regina Milburn blasted a double to center to score pinch-runner
Stefanie Braciszewski to give the Lions a 1-0 lead.
The Lions extended the lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning when O'Connor drew a bases-loaded walk that scored Cembrale.
Long had two hits to lead Albright against Eureka, while Roman, Milburn, Garuffe and
Jordan Chell each had one hit.
Albright, which improved to 7-1 on the season, will look to remain undefeated in South Carolina on Wednesday (March 16) when it faces Sarah Lawrence at 9:30 a.m. and Spalding at 11:30 a.m.
