Falcons use Long Ball to Sweep Albright

GRANTHAM, Pa. -- Austin Roth had three hits and drove in a run, but Messiah hit three home runs to sweep a doubleheader from Albright on Saturday as both teams opened MAC Commonwealth play at Starry Field.

Messiah won the opener 7-3 and completed the sweep with a 6-0 victory in game two.

Roth was 2-for-3 and drove in a run in game one, and also was 1-for-2 in game two to lead the Albright offensive attack. Noah Beebe also collected two hits in game one, while Julian Cimino, Micah Storms and Tanner Brescancine each had one hit.

Roth and Jack Shevlin collected the only Albright hits in game two as John Griffitts fired a shutout for the Falcons. He worked 7.0 innings, allowed just the two hits and struck out 14 batters to pick up the victory.

Messiah scored twice in the bottom of the second inning of game one before the Lions rallied to tie the score in the top of the fourth.

With one out, Beebe singled through the left side to start the rally and advanced to second when Cimino followed with a single. Both runners moved up a base on a groundout by Storms and Brescancine singled to left to score Beebe and cut the lead to 2-1.

Roth then tied the score when he singled to left to bring home Cimino and draw the Lions even at 2-2.

Messiah, which improved to 8-8 overall and 2-0 in conference play, responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning to regain the lead.

Albright, which fell to 3-7 overall and 0-2 in conference play, answered with a run in the top of the fifth inning.

Jeff Yordy reached on an error and advanced to second on a ground out by Bryan Brubaker. Beebe then lined a single to right to bring home Yordy and tie the score at 3-3.

Messiah regained the lead when Sam Stewart, who drove in four runs, homered to lead off the fifth inning. The Falcons then put the game away by socring three times in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Messiah took control of game two from the outset as the Falcons scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning, which was more than enough for Griffitts.

Albright returns to action on Monday (March 21) when it completes the three-game series with the Falcons beginning at 3:30 p.m. at Kelchner Field.
