O'Connor Breaks School Record; Lions Split with King's

READING, Pa. -- Sammi O'Connor broke the Albright career record for strikeouts and pitched a three-hit shutout leading the Lions to a 1-0 victory over King's in game one of a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday at the Albright Softball Field.

O'Connor registered 13 strikeouts in the doubleheader to raise her career total to 366, which surpassed the previous school record of 360 held by Ashley Young who pitched for the Lions from 2003-06. Making O'Connor's achievement even more significant is the fact that she topped the previous record in only two seasons at Albright after transferring from the Community College of Baltimore County at Catonsville.

The record-breaking strikeout came in the third inning of game one when O'Connor retired Amber Saylor on a swining strike three giving her 361 in her career.

The senior fanned 11 in game one to reach double figures in strikeouts for the 11th time this season. O'Connor, who is ranked fourth in the nation in strikeouts, improved to 11-7 on the season with the win.

Albright, which is 18-9 on the season, got the only run it would need for O'Connor in the fourth inning.

Kelly Cembrale led off the inning with a bunt single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. O'Connor moved Cembrale to third on a groundout and Stephanie Pomante plated the only run of the game with an infield single.

O'Connor worked around a two-out triple in the King's sixth inning by getting a foul out to third to end the inning. She finished off the Monarchs in the seventh inning with a strikeout, a ground out and a foul out.

Cembrale and Pomante recorded the only hits for the Lions in game one.

King's, which is 13-11 on the year, came back to win game two 7-1. Kelcie Senchak drove in four runs, including a three-run homer, to lead the Monarchs to the win.

Corinne Garuffe went 3-for-3 with an RBI for Albright in game two. Cembrale had a hit for the Lions and Regina Milburn scored the Lions run.

Albright returns to conference action on Saturday (April 16) when it hosts Widener at 1 p.m.
