O'Connor Breaks Single-Season Strikeout Record

READING, Pa. -- Senior Sammi O'Connor struck out 16 batters in a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader sweep of Widener on Saturday to break her own school record for strikeouts in a season.

O'Connor had 14 strikeouts in the Lions 2-1 game one victory and then added two more as Albright completed the sweep with a 5-2 victory in the second game.

The 16 strikeouts raised her season total to 195, which topped her her own previous school record of 187 she established last season.

O'Connor was dominant in the first game and her 14 strikeouts was just one shy of tying her own school record of 15 set last season. She permitted just four hits and ended Widener's 15-game winning streak with the win in game one.

Albright, which improved to 20-9 overall and 5-3 in the MAC Commonwealth, got both of its runs in the bottom of the fifth inning of game one.

Regina Milburn doubled to lead off the inning and moved to third when Brianne Long reached on a error. Long stole second base to move into scoring position and both runners came in to score when Sera Stull lined a two RBI single.

Widener reached O'Connor for a run in the top of the sixth inning, but O'Connor retired the Pride in the seventh without any further damage to secure the win.

Kelly Cembrale, Jordan Chell and O'Connor each had two hits in the second game in helping lead the Lions to the win. Long had a two-run single, while Stull also had a single for the Lions.

O'Connor went the distance in the second game as well and allowed just one earned run to improve to 14-7 on the season.

With the two wins, Albright surpassed its win total from all of last season. Last year Albright finished the season with a 19-16 overall record, which marked the Lions first winning season since the 2005 season. The 20 wins for the Lions this season marks only the third time in school history that Albright has reached the 20-win plateau.

The Lions return to action on Monday (April 18) when it visits Hood for a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
