READING, Pa. -- Senior
Sammi O'Connor recorded three hits, drove in a run and pitched a complete game in game one, but 16th-ranked Messiah swept a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader from Albright on Thursday at the Albright Softball Field.
Messiah won the opener 2-0 and completed the sweep with a 9-1 win in game two.
O'Connor went 3-for-7 in the doubleheader and drove in the Lions run with a single. She also pitched a complete game in the opener and permitted five hits and allowed no earned runs.
Messiah, which improved to 30-3 on the season and 12-0 in conference play, received two outstanding pitching efforts to gain the victories. Courtney Allen allowed three hits in game one and struck out five to improve to 16-0 on the season, while Madelyn Yannetti came went 5.0 innings in relief in game two and permitted four hits and no runs and struck out one batter.
Brooke Pompeo drove in both runs in the first game when she hit a two-out single that scored Amber Bingaman and Carrie Fix.
Amanda Jones led the Falcons in game two as she went 3-for-4 with a two-run home run and scored two runs.
Albright, which dropped to 23-12 on the season and 6-6 in conference play, jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning of the second game.
Kelly Cembrale lined a double to right center to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by
Jordan Chell.
O'Connor singled to right that brought home Cembrale with the first run of the game.
Albright starter
Riley Gerenda held the Falcons off the scoreboard until the fourth inning when they scored two runs to take the lead for good.
Albright returns to action on Saturday (April 23) when it hosts Alvernia in a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader. This marks the final home doubleheader of the season for the Lions and also is Senior Day for O'Connor,
Sera Stull and
Morgan Cullen.
