Lions Late Rally Not Enough

READING, Pa. – Visiting Stevenson scored 31 straight points as the
Mustangs (2-0, 1-0 Middle Atlantic Conference) defeated Albright (0-2,
0-1 Middle Atlantic Conference) 31-26 Saturday afternoon in football action.

The start time of the game was moved up to 10:30 a.m. due to excessive heat.

Albright did attempt to rally, scoring two touchdowns in the fourth
quarter. The last one came with 1:17 left in the game. However, the two
point conversion failed, as then the Mustangs recovered the ensuing
onside kick.

Stevenson was led by junior quarterback Daniel Williams who was
12-for-24 for 173 yards and two scores. He threw touchdown passes of 43
and 3 yards in the win.

Albright was led junior running back Roemello Monroe who rushed for 117
yards and a score, while junior quarterback David Gavrilov came into the
game in the second half and threw for 156 yards on 12-for-19 passing.
Junior wide receiver Malik Jackson had a nice game with 69
yards receiving on six catches.

Defensively, Albright senior safety Donte Thomas had five tackles and an
interception return of 43 yards for a score. Stevenson got 11 tackles, a
game-high, from senior defensive back Austin Tennessee.

Albright struck first as Thomas intercepted a pass from Williams and
returned it 43 yards for a score and a 7-0 lead with 8:25 left in the
opening quarter. Albright would increase its lead to 10-0 on its next
drive, finishing a 36-yard, seven-play excursion with a 42-yard field
goal from sophomore kicker Kevin Goetz.

Goetz would later kick a 24-yard field goal just 1:25 into the second
quarter to give Albright its biggest lead of the day at 13-0.
On the ensuing drive, Stevenson would get on the board as sophomore
running back Jainard Crawley-Lambert rushed for a 7-yard score and a
13-7 Albright lead with 11:28 left.

The Mustangs would intercept Lion quarterback Mike Knight at the
Stevenson 44, which would lead to a field goal from senior kicker Tim
Sternfeld with 3:10 left in the first half, cutting the deficit to 13-10.

Albright saw its next drive stopped by an interception, which ended the
first half.

In the second half, Stevenson took the lead for good as Williams threw a
43-yard touchdown pass to sophomore wide receiver Preston Addo with
11:53 left in the third for a 17-13 lead. Stevenson would get the ball
right back, as they forced a fumble on Albright's first play from
scrimmage.

With the ball at the Albright 26, Stevenson went six plays for its next
score, a 3-yard touchdown run from junior wide receiver Dequan Eillson
with 9:35 left making the score 24-13 in favor of the Mustangs.
Crawley-Lambert would give Stevenson its biggest lead of the game with a
touchdown run with 1:36 left in the third to make the score 31-13.

In the fourth, Albright scored after a 12-play, 77 yard drive when
Monroe rushed off tackle for three yards and a 31-20 Stevenson lead. On
its next possession, Albright got all the way down to the Stevenson 9,
before Gavrilov was intercepted by Stevenson's Ashton Leschke with 7:54
left.

After forcing a three-and-out, Albright got as far as the Stevenson
31-yard line before Goetz went wide left on a 48-yard field goal with
4:03 left.

On its last drive, Albright scored on a 17-yard pass from Gavrilov to
Vinny Williams. But, the two-point conversion failed making the final
score 31-26.

Albright will host Lycoming on Saturday.
