READING, Pa – The Albright field hockey team collected its third win of the season Wednesday night with a 3-1 win over William Paterson in Shirk Stadium. The Lions are now 3-1 in 2016, while William Paterson sees its record drop to 4-2.
Albright came out firing, peppering the Pioneer goal with four shots in the opening minutes of play. The Lions continued to control play, and were rewarded with the game's first goal. Junior
Amanda Long scored in the 23rd minute, assisted by freshman
Marley Berger, to give Albright a 1-0 lead. Long collected Berger's pass from the right post and beat the Pioneer goalie for her first goal of the season.
Albright held William Paterson without a shot in the first half, but Long's goal was the only score as the Lions took their 1-0 lead into the break.
The Pioneers found their offense after halftime, creating scoring chances in the early going. Paterson drew even in the 49th minute when Meghin Stanton corralled a blocked shot off a penalty corner and scored to make the score 1-1.
Albright regained the lead with just over 10 minutes remaining in regulation time. Senior
Kendra Delgado inserted a corner to junior
Tracy Snyder, whose shot found the back of the net to put the Lions back on top 2-1.
Long put the game away for Albright, scoring her second goal of the night with 5:31 left on the clock to push Albright's lead to 3-1. She put back a rebound off a shot from Berger to give the Lions their two-goal cushion and the final margin of victory.
Sophomore goaltender
Aileen Taylor had one save in net for the Lions. Albright finished the game with 16 shots and eight penalty corners to just three shots and three corners for the Pioneers.
Albright returns to action next Tuesday. The Lions will host Cedar Crest College at 4:00 in Shirk Stadium.
