READING, Pa. – Shannon Thomas broke an almost 20 year old record making eight three-pointers in a single game as the Albright women's basketball team romped past Arcadia 83-51 on Wednesday night at the Bollman Center. The win improved the Lions record to 15-4 overall and 10-0 in the MAC Commonwealth.
Thomas, who finished with a game-high 27 points in the conference match-up, went 8-of-11 from behind the arc to break Rachel Connolly's 1999 record of seven made threes in a game. The senior went one-of-two from the line as well as added five rebounds, three assists and one steal.
Nina Mazzarelli,
Devan Horka, and
Alysha Lofton all finished the game in double-figures. Mazzarelli scored 17 points for the Lions while Horka finished with 14 points, four rebounds and two assists. Lofton earned her ninth double-double of the season after finishing the game with 11 points and 11 rebounds. On top of a double-double, Lofton added four steals, three assists and two blocks.
Albright controlled the pace of the game from the opening tip-off and never trailed in the contest. The Lions started the game on a 5-0 run thanks to Lofton and Horka. The lead continued to build for Albright as the team went 11-of-18 from the field, including three threes, to jump ahead 26-13 at the end of the first quarter.
Thomas exploded in the second quarter scoring 11 of the Lions 17 points to extend the team's lead to 43-21 at half. Midway through the period, Thomas made three threes in 2:09 to highlight a 11-0 Albright run. She ignited the run started with 5:14 on the clock making her first three of the quarter. A layup from
Kewa Gray and back-to-back threes capped the Lions run.
Arcadia continued to have trouble defending the Lions once the third quarter started. Albright outscored its opponents 26-15 with Mazzarelli leading the team with nine points. The junior went three-of-four from the field and a perfect three-of-three from the line. Along with hot shooting, the Lions defense stepped up in the opening minutes of the second half. The Knights were withheld a point for almost three minutes before an Arcadia free throw broke the Lions 13-0 run.
Despite needing to make three three-pointers to break the record, the pressure never showed on Thomas, who drained three of her four shot attempts to break the record. With 5:06 on the clock,
Morgan Harris connected with Thomas allowing Thomas to tie the Albright record and push the Lions lead to 78-46. Less than two minutes later, Harris and Thomas would team up once again. Harris dished to a waiting Thomas, who sank her final shot of the evening to break the record with 3:14 remaining in the game.
Lauren Killion finished with a game-high three blocks, while
Jane Joyce led the Lions with five assists.
Albright wraps up its week by hosting Stevenson on Saturday afternoon. The conference match-up begins at 4 p.m.
