Field Hockey Registers 2-1 Win Over Arcadia

READING, Pa. – The Albright Lions field hockey team built a two-goal lead in the second half, and held on from there as they defeated Arcadia 2-1 in MAC Commonwealth play at Shirk Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

With the win, the Lions improve to 7-6 on the season with a 3-2 record in MAC Commonwealth play. Meanwhile, the Knights drop to 8-8 on the season with a 1-4 record in conference play. Albright now will at hold a one-game lead for the final spot in the MAC Commonwealth tournament with two conference games left to play.

Albright came out dominant on both sides of the field by preventing little Knights possession in the Lions zone, while creating multiple scoring chances. The Lions nearly scored in the ninth minute off back-to-back chances in the circle from senior Tracy Snyder and freshman Bailey Lehman. Snyder then came back two minutes later in the 11th minute on a close shot that was saved by the Knights goalkeeper. Albright finally got on the board in the 33rd minute when senior Amanda Long scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season to give the Lions a 1-0 lead. Long tapped in the ball past the goalkeeper after sophomore Kaley Donmoyer initially blasted it from the top right circle. The Lions held a 9-0 shot advantage after one period.

The Lions would add to their lead just seven minutes into the second half when Donmoyer scored her second goal of the season in the center of the circle off a pass from junior Dennise Greene. The Knights began a charge in the final minutes that started with their first shot of the game in the 59th minute that was saved. Arcadia then broke through in the 66th minute when Kayla Brennan scored off a rebound that was initially shot by Knights leading scorer Lauren Dougherty. The goal was the first one the Lions have allowed at home in three games. Albright then fended off pressure in the final minute from the Knights to hold on for the victory.

Albright held a 13-3 shot advantage after outshooting the Knights 4-3 in the second half. The Lions also held a 9-2 advantage in penalty corners.

Junior goalkeeper Aileen Taylor earned the win after making two saves and allowing one goal in the entire 70 minutes of play. Knights goalkeeper Maya Stern suffered the loss after making six saves and allowing two goals in 70 minutes of action.

The Lions will return to action on Saturday, October 21st when they will travel to face Hood in MAC Commonwealth play at 6 p.m.
