GLENSIDE, Pa. – Despite two goals from junior
Emily Mollica, the Albright Lions women's soccer team dropped a tight 3-2 contest against Arcadia in MAC Commonwealth play on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, the Lions conclude the regular season with a 10-7-1 overall record and a 4-3-1 mark in MAC Commonwealth play to finish fourth in the standings. Meanwhile, the Knights improve to 13-5 on the season with a 7-1 record in conference play to finish second.
Arcadia came out of the gates flying in the first half and opened the scoring in the 4
th minute on a goal from Kristen Carrete after she collected a rebound from a previous shot. The Knights continued to control play for the majority of the first half as the Lions were unable to record a shot until the 25
th minute. However, Albright made the most of their chances when they got them in the first half with a goal from Mollica in the 38
th minute to tie the game at one. On her first goal of the season, Mollica scored off a beautiful free kick that she curled around a wall of Knights. The Knights still held a wide 10-3 advantage in shots despite being tied.
The Knights came back to retake the lead in the 55
th minute of the game off a goal from Jess Kelly that was set up by a corner kick into the box. Lose rebounds continued to hurt the Lions as Arcadia extended its lead in the 65
th minute on a goal from Veronica Pontis after she collected a rebound opportunity. The Knights defense would hold the Lions without a shot until Mollica scored her second goal of the game as time expired in the contest to bring the final to 3-2.
Arcadia held an 18-7 shot advantage for the game and an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks for the contest. Lions junior goalkeeper
Alexis Tunney suffered the loss after making five saves and allowing three goals in just over 85 minutes of play. A pair of Knights goalies played in the contest with Brianna Williams earning the win after shutting out the Lions for just over 37 minutes.
The Lions will now turn their attention to the MAC Commonwealth Tournament as they will host fifth-seeded Lebanon Valley on Tuesday, October 31
