Field Hockey knocks off Lebanon Valley, 1-0

READING, Pa. – Senior Amanda Long scoring in the 32nd minute turned out to be the only goal the Albright Lions field hockey team needed as they defeated Lebanon Valley 1-0 in MAC Commonwealth play on Friday night at Shirk Stadium.

With the win, the Lions improve to 5-5 overall and 2-1 in MAC Commonwealth play. Meanwhile, the Dutchmen fall to 3-9 with a 0-3 record in conference play. This is the first time the Lions have defeated Lebanon Valley since the 1984 season.

The Dutchmen tallied the initial good scoring chances of the contest in the third minute after back to back shots were saved in the front of the net by Lions goalkeeper Aileen Taylor. Albright did not tally their first shot until the 13th minute of the game, but began dominating in time of possession as the half went along. The Lions nearly scored in the 24th minute off two chances from senior Tracy Snyder and sophomore Kaley Donmoyer after a penalty corner. Albright would finally get the break they needed in the 32nd minute after Long scored her seventh goal of the season on a second chance opportunity. A penalty corner was played to Snyder, who took the initial shot that was saved by the Dutchmen goalkeeper before Long got ahold of the ball to score.

Lebanon Valley began fighting back in the second half and nearly scored in the 45th minute on a shot right in the center of the circle. The teams would then trade excellent chances off penalty corners which included a sprawling save from Taylor in the 60th minute on Maddie Fox. The Lions needed one last stand on a penalty corner in the final minute which they got after the ball was incidentally kicked by a Dutchmen player after the ball was played above the circle.

The Lions held a 13-9 shot advantage for the game despite being outshot 6-4 in the second half. Albright also held a 7-4 advantage in penalty corners as well.

Taylor earned her fourth shutout win of the season after making four saves in the full 70 minutes of play. Dutchmen goalkeeper Tori ByDeLey suffered the tough luck loss after making 10 saves in the entire 70 minutes.

Albright will return to action on Wednesday, October 11th when they will host DeSales in non-conference action at 4:30 p.m.
