Men’s Hoops Beats King’s, Wins Tipoff Tourney

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Albright men's basketball team moved to 3-0 on the season as it defeated King's, 79-67, on Saturday afternoon to win the Susquehanna Trailways Tipoff Tournament. DeJuan Smith was named Tournament MVP, and Jared Rappoport made the All-Tournament Team.

Rappoport made his presence felt on the glass on Saturday, pulling down 16 rebounds. Nine of those boards came on the offensive glass, and he finished with a game-high 21 points. He also added four blocks. Smith finished with 17 points, seven rebounds, four assists and four steals.

Smith starred in the key sequence in the second half. King's (1-1) hit a three pointer to cut its deficit to four, 46-42, with 17:01 to play. The teams traded misses on the next several possessions, but Smith broke the scoreless streak with a layup to make it 48-42. He stole the ball on King's next possession and went in on the fast break for another layup to push the advantage to eight points.

A bucket from Rappoport with 14:07 left gave the Lions a double-digit lead, 52-42. The game would never again fall to within single digits. The defense for Albright (3-0) stayed strong, holding King's without a point for more than five minutes in that span. By the time King's scored again with 11:48 left, it was to cut the Albright lead to 13.

Samuel Majekodunmi scored four straight points to push the Lions' lead to 18 with 8:05 to play, and the lead lingered in the high teens until a late push from King's brought the final margin to 12.

Smith just missed a double-double for the tournament, averaging 14.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game.

Jayson Clark also hit double digits for the Lions, finishing with 10 points. Majekodunmi and Fred Rowles each had eight points. The Lions forced 26 turnovers and scored 38 points off those turnovers.

Albright opens its home schedule on Tuesday night against Eastern at 7 p.m.
