READING, Pa. – The Albright Lions women's basketball team had three players reach double-figures in scoring as they pulled away from Stevenson for a 75-53 win to open MAC Commonwealth play Wednesday night at the Bollman Center.
With the win, the Lions have won three straight and improve to 3-2 overall with a 1-0 record in MAC Commonwealth play. Meanwhile, the Mustangs fall to 3-3 overall with a 0-1 record in conference play.
A trio of seniors scored in double digits in the win for the Lions, as
Devan Horka lead the team with a game-high 14 points with 12 of them coming in the first half. She also added six rebounds, five assists, and two blocks.
Alysha Lofton posted 13 points, seven rebounds, three assists, three blocks, and three steals while
Jane Joyce fell a rebound short of a double-double with 11 points, nine rebounds, and six assists. Junior
MiKayla Lea posted a game-high 10 rebounds with eight points and sophomore
Lauren Killion went 3-of-3 from beyond the arc to post nine points.
The Lions opened the game with seven unanswered points and held the Mustangs without a field goal until the 5:25-mark of the 1
st quarter. After the teams traded points for four minutes, the Lions hit their largest lead of the quarter at 17-8 with 1:00 left before the Mustangs closed the quarter with five straight points behind a half-court three-pointer at the buzzer. Stevenson pulled within 18-15 with 9:10 left in the half before the Lions reeled off a 10-0 run that spanned just over two minutes to take a 28-15 lead at the 6:45-mark. Both teams then each tallied runs of five unanswered points that left the score with a 33-20 Lions advantage with 2:47 left in the half. A layup from Lofton with 29 seconds left gave the Lions a 15 point advantage before the Mustangs countered with a jumper with five seconds left in the half to leave the score at 39-26 in the half.
Stevenson outscored the Lions 5-2 in the first three minutes of the second half to cut the Lions lead down to 10 at 41-31 as the Lions went scoreless for just over three minutes. Timely baskets from Albright kept the lead in double-digits for the rest of the quarter. The Lions also held the Mustangs without a field goal for the final 4:09 of the third quarter to take a 53-41 lead into the final quarter. The Mustangs scored a field goal with 9:17 left in the half to bring the score within 11, but that was as close as they were going to get for the rest of the game. Albright used a 14-2 run over the span of nearly four minutes to take a commanding 68-45 lead at the 3:34-mark. Five straight points from Albright extended its lead to the largest of the game at 73-47 and would cruise from there to tally the 22-point win in which they never trailed.
The Lions shot 47.4% (27-of-57) from the field behind shooting 53.6 percent in the first half. Albright shot 36.4% from beyond the arc and just 63% from the free throw line. Albright also held a dominant 53-32 rebounding advantage and tallied 13 second-chance points plus 21 bench points. Meanwhile, the Mustangs shot just 26.8% from the field after going just 8-of-36 (22.2%) from the field in the second half and 33.3% from beyond the arc. Stevenson shot 64.7 percent from the free throw line and got 14 poinst off the bench.
Stevenson leading scorer Hannah Crist led the Mustangs with 10 points, while Imani Sanders posted nine points with all of them coming in the first half. Olivia Coleman added eight points and eight rebounds apiece.
Albright will return to action on Saturday, December 2
nd when it hosts Arcadia in MAC Commonwealth play at 2 p.m.
