Dominant Third Quarter Leads Women's Hoops Over Arcadia

READING, Pa. – The Albright Lions women's basketball team used a dominant third quarter to pull away from Arcadia in a 66-46 win in MAC Commonwealth play at the Bollman Center on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Lions have won four straight games to improve to 4-2 overall with a 2-0 record in MAC Commonwealth play. Meanwhile, the Knights drop to 3-3 overall with a 0-1 record in conference play.

Senior Nina Mazzarelli led all scorers on the floor with a season-high 18 points behind three three-pointers. Classmate Devan Horka added 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field along with seven rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Senior Alysha Lofton fell a rebound short of a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds. She also added four assists, three steals, and two blocks. Junior MiKayla Lea posted five of the teams 11 blocks in addition to tallying five points and five rebounds.

The Lions got off to a rough start in the opening minutes as the Knights raced out to a 6-0 lead at the 7:05-mark behind four Albright turnovers and three missed shots. Albright then responded with 11-straight points over the span of four minutes to take an 11-6 lead at the 2:56-mark that was capped by a layup from Lofton. Arcadia then outscored the Lions 7-4 in the final two minutes of the quarter to bring the Albright lead to 15-13. The Lions opened the second quarter on a 7-2 to take a 22-14 lead at the 8:03-mark capped by a three-pointer from Mazzarelli. Albright then went five minutes without a point which allowed the Knights to reel off seven straight points to cut the lead down to 22-21 with 3:03 left in the half. Albright responded with five points before a pair of Arcadia free throws in the final seconds cut the Lions lead to 27-23 in halftime.

Mazzarelli opened the second half with five straight points for the Lions which began a 15-2 run to take a 41-25 lead at the 6:04-mark capped by a three-point play from Horka. The teams traded baskets for four minutes before Albright ended the quarter with seven straight points to take a 55-34 lead into the fourth quarter. After outscoring the Knights 28-12 in the third, the Lions extended its lead to the largest of the game at 62-37 with 6:03 left in the game. Albright held the Knights without a field goal in the fourth quarter until the 2:02-mark which turned out to be the only field goal Arcadia had in the final quarter.

The Lions shot 41.9% (26-of-62) from the field behind a 50% mark in the second half. Albright went 33.3% from beyond the arc and 9-of-14 (64.3%) from the free throw line. Albright out-rebounded the current second best rebounding team in the conference by a 46-33 margin which led to 17 second chance points. Meanwhile, the Knights shot just 27.7% from the field and 14.3% from the three-point line. Arcadia went 19-of-31 from the free throw line and got 20 points off turnovers.

Albright will return to action on Wednesday, December 6th when they will travel to face Widener in MAC Commonwealth Play for a tip-off 8 p.m.
