READING, Pa. – All five starters for the Albright Lions women's basketball team scored in double-figures as they picked up an 82-74 non-conference win against Stockton on Wednesday evening at the Bollman Center.
With the win, the Lions improve to 6-4 overall as they played their final home game of the 2017 calendar year. Meanwhile, the Ospreys of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) drop to 6-4 on the season.
Senior
Nina Mazzarelli paced the Lions offense with a game-high 24 points behind going 4-of-8 from beyond the arc. Mazzarelli has scored in double-digits in five straight games and posted five rebounds, four assists, two steals, and one block. Classmate
Alysha Lofton followed with another strong game behind 19 points, eight rebounds, six assists, three steals, and one block. Senior
Devan Horka posted her first double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds (six offensive) along with four assists and three steals. Classmate
Jane Joyce added 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field along with six rebounds and three assists, while junior
MiKayla Lea finished with 11 points and three rebounds.
The Lions hit the ground running to start the game by jumping out to a 15-2 lead at the 6:43-mark of the first quarter behind going 7-of-10 from the field in that stretch and forcing four Osprey turnovers. Stockton countered with 10 unanswered points over a two and a half minute stretch to bring the score to 15-12 at the 4:05-mark. Albright was able to stretch its lead out to six at 24-18 to conclude the quarter after trading baskets in the final minutes. Mazzarelli began the second quarter with a three-point play to bring the lead to nine before the Ospreys went on a 17-3 run over a span of 4:19 to take its first lead of the game at 35-30 with 3:03 left in the half. The Lions went just over five minutes without a field goal in that span but closed the half out with some momentum as they outscored the Ospreys 6-3 in the final three minutes of the first half.
Both teams went back and forth to start the second half as they traded the lead five times in the first four minutes of the third quarter. The Ospreys took a 51-49 lead at the 3:12-mark of the third before Albright roared back with a 11-2 run to close out the quarter with a 60-53 lead. Lea scored eight straight points in the run behind back-to-back three-pointers. Stockton closed the lead down to four in the first 40 seconds of the last quarter before Albright went on a 14-2 run to take its largest lead of the game at 75-59 with 6:20 left in the game. The Ospreys made one last charge with a 13-2 run that spanned nearly five minutes to close the lead down to five at 77-72, but were unable to get any closer as the Lions outscored them 5-2 in the final minute to preserve the win behind going 5-of-6 from the free throw line in the final minute.
Albright finished the game shooting 39.2 percent from the field after going 40.5 percent in the second half. The Lions went 50 percent from beyond the arc (7-of-14) and 17-of-23 (73.9%) from the free throw line. They forced 23 Osprey turnovers which led to 21 points and outscored Stockton 25-7 in second chance points. Meanwhile, the Ospreys shot 47.5 percent from the field (28-of-59) behind a 57.7 percent effort in the first half. Stockton shot just 5-of-18 from beyond the arc and went 13-of-18 (72.2 percent) from the free throw line. The Lions held a 41-34 rebounding advantage with 21 of them being offensive rebounds.
Najha Treadwell led Stockton with a game-high 26 points on 10-of-15 from the field and added five rebounds. Sasha Williams flirted with a triple-double behind 17 points on 8-of-13 from the field, eight rebounds, and seven assists.
The Lions will return to action after a week off on Friday, December 29
th when they will open the Montclair State Holiday Tournament with No. 1/2 Tufts at 6:30 p.m.
