Women's Basketball Drops Road Contest to Moravian, 65-56

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – In its first bye weekend in MAC Commonwealth play, the Albright women's basketball team dropped a 65-56 non-conference game against Moravian on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, the Lions drop to 4-4 on the season and finish the week 0-2 before its week long break between games. Meanwhile, the Greyhounds of the Landmark Conference improve to 8-2 on the season and have won three straight games.

Senior Nina Mazzarelli led all Albright scorers for the second straight game with 16 points and added five rebounds, two assists, and two steals. A pair of Lions each tallied eight points and four rebounds in senior Jane Joyce and junior MiKayla Lea, while senior Devan Horka posted a team-high nine rebounds and six points in the loss.

Albright raced out to an early 5-2 lead behind a three-pointer to Mazzarelli to start the game, but was then countered by six straight points by the Greyhounds to take an 8-5 lead at the 7:46-mark. That began the start of a 12-2 run by Moravian to take a 15-7 lead at the 4:12-mark. The Lions snapped a stretch of almost four minutes without a field goal at the 3:55-mark but then was outscored 7-3 in the final minutes as the Greyhounds took a 22-12 lead after one quarter. Albright used an 8-2 run to start the second quarter to cut the lead down to 24-20 with 7:34 left in the half after hitting back-to-back three-pointers to start the quarter. However, Albright could not sustain momentum as they went 4:52 without a field goal, while the Greyhounds scored six straight points over that span to take a 30-20 lead at the 3:20-mark. Moravian maintained a 10-point lead with 1:35 left in the half before the Lions outscored them 7-2 in the final minute to cut the lead down to 37-32 at halftime.

The Lions started fast in the second half with seven quick unanswered points in the first minute and a half to take their first lead since early in the 1st quarter at 39-37. After two short runs by each team to lock the score at 42, the Greyhounds scored seven points over a span of nearly six minutes in which the Lions did not score a point. Sophomore Kewa Gray hit a jumper with 38 seconds left in the quarter to end an eight minute stretch of no field goals for the Lions to bring the score to 49-44 into the final quarter. Four straight points from Joyce cut the Greyhounds lead down to 1 at 49-48 with 8:40 left in the game, but Moravian held the Lions scoreless for over three minutes and scored three straight points to take a 52-48 at the 5:30-mark. Mazzarelli cut the lead down to two with a layup to make it 52-50 before the Greyhounds put the game away with an 8-2 run to take a 60-52 lead with 50 seconds left in the game. Moravian then hit 6-of-7 from the free throw line in the final minute to seal the 65-56 win.

Albright shot 31.4 percent (22-of-70) for the game and 7-of-19 (36.8%) from beyond the arc in the loss. The Lions shot just 5-of-10 from the free throw line and committed 22 turnovers which led to 27 Greyhound points. Meanwhile the Greyhounds shot 37.5 percent (24-of-64) from the field and 35.3 percent (6-of-17) from beyond the arc. Moravian shot 57.9 percent (11-of-19) from the free throw stripe and was outrebounded 52-42 by the Lions.

Camille McPherson led all scorers on the floor with a game-high 21 points along with three rebounds and two assists. Maddie Capuano added 10 points in the win with a game-high five assists.

The Lions will have a week off before returning to action on Sunday, December 17th when they will travel to face King's College in non-conference action at 1 p.m.
