First-Place Lycoming Slips Past Men’s Basketball

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Fred Rowles led a balanced scoring attack with 18 points, but the Albright men's basketball team lost at first-place Lycoming, 90-83, on Saturday afternoon. Omari Ringgold, Garrett Oplinger and DeJuan Smith joined Rowles in double figures.

The Lions led by as many as eight points midway through the first half thanks to an 11-2 run that lasted for five minutes. Rowles scored six of the points on that run, helping to turn a 9-8 deficit into a 19-11 lead with 11:25 remaining in the half.

Lycoming turned it around and retook the lead with less than five minutes to play in the half. DeLascio Dancy, Jr., tied the score at 28 with a basket with 4:36 left, and Smith brought the Lions to within a point after a three-point play with 2:16 remaining. Oplinger made two free throws with five seconds left to send the game into the half with Lycoming ahead, 39-36.

Both teams shot better than 48 percent in the second half while combining for just six turnovers, and the scoring escalated as a result. Ringgold hit a jumper to give the Lions a short-lived lead, and Rowles hit a three with 14:35 left to make it 50-48 Albright. The Lions had their last lead on Oplinger's three pointer with 13:12 remaining, 54-52. Ringgold had 17 points while Oplinger finished with 16.

Lycoming pushed ahead and held a lead that hit 10 points as late as with 1:06 on the clock, but Rowles and Oplinger hit three pointers to cut the deficit to 86-80 with 44 seconds left. After Lycoming split its free throws, Rowles drained another three to make it 87-83 with 29 seconds left. But thanks to three makes at the stripe by Lycoming and a pair of misses behind the arc for the Lions in the final half-minute, Albright's comeback bid fell short.

Smith finished with 13 points while Jayson Clark had nine. Dancy, Jr., had six points, four rebounds and four assists. Lycoming outscored the Lions, 19-2, in points off turnovers.

Albright finishes the regular season against Messiah next Saturday at 4 p.m.
