WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Albright women's basketball team had four players score in double figures including
Alysha Lofton's 12
th double-double of the season as the Lions moved to 15-0 in MAC Commonwealth play with their 80-68 win at Lycoming on Saturday afternoon.
Lycoming started fast, though, jumping out to a 22-16 lead after the first period. Lycoming actually extended that lead to nine points with a three pointer on its first possession of the second quarter, but that was one of the last moments of comfort for the Warriors.
Nina Mazzarelli and
Devan Horka combined to score the next 14 points for the Lions. Horka had six of those points, and Mazzarelli hit a pair of three pointers to go along with a layup. Her second three pointer capped the pair's scoring streak to make it 30-27 Albright. Lofton added a bucket after that to make it 32-27, capping a 12-0 Albright run. Mazzarelli led all scorers with 23 points. Horka had 19 points and nine rebounds.
Lycoming pulled back to 32-32 with 4:43 left in the half, but
Shannon Thomas took her turn with the offensive surge. She went on an 8-0 run to push the Lions lead to 40-32. She finished with 17 points, seven rebounds and six assists. After a
Lauren Killion basket,
Jane Joyce completed a three-point play to send the Lions into halftime with a 45-34 lead. Albright outscored Lycoming, 29-12, in the second period. Joyce had six points and seven rebounds.
The lead stayed in double figures for most of the second half, dipping to nine points on a few occasions in the fourth quarter. Lycoming had it to 70-61 with 4:33 to play in the game, but Albright rattled off the next nine points to extend back into double digits for the remainder of regulation.
Albright closes the regular season next Saturday against Messiah in a game that may determine the top seed for the upcoming MAC Commonwealth tournament. Messiah is 13-1 in conference play and 22-1 overall. Its only loss came at home to Albright in January.
