Late Rally Lifts Baseball Past Marywood

READING, Pa. – The Albright baseball team scored a run in the seventh and two more in the eighth inning to defeat Marywood, 5-4, on Wednesday afternoon at Kelchner Field. Albright came back from a 4-1 deficit to get its first win of the season in its home opener. Jeff Yordy went 3-for-5 with three RBIs. Matt Fisher and Trevor Mastria combined for five innings of scoreless, two-hit relief.

The Lions (1-2) trailed 4-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh, but Nathan Fretz opened the frame with an infield single to the right side. He stole second, and after an out, Yordy's single to center brought him in to make it 4-3.

With the score still 4-3 in the bottom of the eighth, Albright completed its comeback with a two-out rally. After the first two hitters made outs, Austin Roth and Fretz both walked. A wild pitch moved pinch-runner Logan Pennypacker and Fretz to second and third. That's when Jimmy Gentry dropped a single into right to score both runs. The hit was Gentry's lone knock of the day, but it proved to be the winner.

Mastria finished the job in the ninth with a 1-2-3 frame. He struck out three batters in his 1.2 innings of work to earn the win. He followed Fisher's 3.1 innings of two-hit ball to shut down the Marywood offense.

Freshman starting pitcher Shaun O'Reilly gave up a two-run home run in the top of the first inning and single runs in the third and fourth inning, but he struck out two while allowing just four hits and no walks in his four innings of work.

Albright got on the board in the bottom of the third. Yordy doubled home Fretz to make it 3-1. He walked after one out. Fretz scored four of Albright's five runs. He was also 2-for-3. Tanner Brescancine went 2-for-2.

Albright returns to action tomorrow at home against Neumann in a game that was originally scheduled for Friday. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
