Softball Offense Explodes in Split with Stevenson

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Albright softball team pushed 12 runs across the plate in the first game of its doubleheader at Stevenson on Wednesday, leading the Lions to an easy 12-2 win in five innings over the Mustangs. Pitching took over in game two, with Stevenson earning the split with a 2-1 victory.

Kelly Cembrale and Brianne Long each went 3-for-3 for Albright in game one. Cembrale drove in four runs and scored two more while Long had two RBIs and three runs scored.

In the second inning with Stevenson ahead, 1-0, Long and Cembrale each had run-scoring singles to put the Lions ahead, 2-1. Stephany Courtney followed those two RBI singles with one of her own. Long and Cembrale scored on the play to push the Albright lead to 4-1. Courtney went 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

Cembrale struck again in the top of the third. Her two-run single scored Corinne Garuffe and Long to extend the Albright lead to 6-1.

The Lions blew the game open in the fourth inning. Long's RBI double scored Jessica Rodriguez. After an error allowed another run to score to make it 8-1, Cembrale brought Long home to make it 9-1. Courtney's RBI single scored Garuffe to make it 10-1, and Stefanie Braciszewski capped the rally with a two-run single to score Cembrale and Jordan Chell.

Riley Gerenda earned the win, allowing just an unearned run on two hits in three innings.

The solid pitching continued into game two. Stevenson got a two-run single in the bottom of the first off Gerenda, and that would be all she would allow through six innings.

Down 2-0, the Lions came back to get one of those runs back in the top of the second. Rodriguez tripled down the left field line with one out, and she scored on Long's sacrifice fly.

Albright left runners at second and third with one out in the top of the third, and that told the story for the rest of the game. Albright left at least one runner stranded in every inning except for the sixth.

Courtney and Armida Roman each had two hits to lead the Albright attack.

The Lions return home to face Hood on Saturday for a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
