READING, Pa. – Jeff Yordy homered twice as the Albright offense exploded for six runs in the first two innings on its way to an 8-6 win over Susquehanna on Wednesday afternoon.
Another Lion went deep to give Albright an early lead.
Tanner Brescancine hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the first to stake the Lions to a lead that it wouldn't relinquish.
Nathan Fretz led off with a single and scored on the home run. He was 2-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored.
The Lions batted around in the bottom of the second on their way to scoring four more runs. The Lions loaded the bases on three walks, and
Joe Suppa made Susquehanna pay with an RBI single to score
Logan Pennypacker. Pennypacker also had a great diving catch to end the top of the second inning in center field. Yordy followed with a sacrifice fly to score
Bryan Brubaker. That gave Yordy the first of his three RBIs while also handing the Lions a 4-0 lead.
Brescancine followed with a walk to re-load the bases, and
Noah Beebe came through with a two-out, two-run single to score Fretz and Suppa to make it 6-0 Albright after two innings. Susquehanna fought back, however, scoring four runs after two outs in the top of the fourth inning.
The Lions got one of those runs back in the home half of the fourth. Yordy's first home run went out deep to center field to give the Lions a 7-4 lead. Susquehanna continued to cut into the Albright lead as the River Hawks scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Susquehanna had runners at the corners in the top of the sixth after cutting the lead to 7-6, but a fly out to center ended the threat.
Yordy responded again to give Albright some breathing room in the bottom of the sixth. His second homer of the game came with two outs as he hit it out to left center to make it 8-6. It's his first career two-homer game. He also leads the Lions with six home runs.
With all of the scoring, it looked like eight runs may not be enough. Albright turned to
Logan Adams in the seventh, and he shut down Susquehanna through the last three innings. He allowed just one hit in those three innings of work while striking out three. That earned him the win out of the bullpen.
Albright concludes its home schedule with Senior Day on Friday against Lebanon Valley. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m. with the senior ceremony to follow the game.
