Softball Explodes for 11 Runs in Split with King's (PA)

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Albright softball team exploded for 11 runs in the first game of the doubleheader at King's College (PA) on Wednesday on its way to an 11-1 non-conference victory. The Monarchs defeated the Lions in the second game with a score of 5-2.

In the opener, the Lions plated seven of their runs in the second inning. Jordan Chell gave the Lions an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first after the center fielder scored on a King's error.

Albright extended its lead the following inning to 8-0 after five consecutive batters reached base. Brianne Long and Jessica Rodriguez recorded back-to-back singles, and Kelly Cembrale followed with a walk to load the bases. Chell drove in two batters with her first hit of the day, a single, which also advanced her to second base. Cembrale scored on Abigail Lord's single to hand Albright a 4-0 lead. Two batters later, Camille Sears recorded the Lions' fifth hit of the inning and drove in Albright's fifth run. Regina Milburn loaded the bases for Albright with a walk before Stephanie Pomante cleared them with a RBI double to round Albright's offensive surge.

The Lions plated three more runs to extend their lead to 11-0 in the top of the fifth. Alyssa Medina drew a walk with two outs to spark Albright's offense. Chell singled up the middle to put runners on first and second for Lord. Lord smacked a double to left center that would score two runs for the Lions. Stephany Courtney followed with a RBI double of her own to plate Lord for Albright's 11th and final run of the game. The Monarchs scored their lone run in the bottom of the frame.

Riley Gerenda limited the Monarchs to four singles over five innings of work to earn her 13th win of the season.

Albright's bats remained hot to start the second game of the afternoon. Chell and Lord opened the game with back-to-back singles before both runners advanced a base on a wild pitch. Courtney sent the ball down the left field line for a RBI double as the Lions jumped out to a 1-0 lead. Lord scored on a sacrifice fly to extend Albright's lead to 2-0 in the opening frame.

King's battled back in the bottom of the first scoring three runs to take a lead they would never relinquish. The Monarchs added two more runs in the third inning to put the game out of reach.

Six different Lions recorded a base hit with Courtney's double being the only extra-base hit for Albright.

The Lions return home to face Arcadia on Saturday for a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
