OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Albright women's lacrosse team saw its 2017 season end with a 14-5 defeat at Stevenson in the MAC Commonwealth semifinals on Saturday. Albright entered as the No. 3 seed in the tournament while Stevenson was the No. 2 seed. MAC Commonwealth Rookie of the Year
Devon Mela scored two goals for the Lions. All-MAC Honorable Mention
Sophie Bass also scored twice for Albright.
Stevenson scored three goals in the first 1:56 to take a 3-0 lead on the Lions early in the first half. Less than a minute after Stevenson's third goal, Bass scored her first goal to the Lions on the board. She took a feed from All-MAC Second Teamer
Mariah Cullen and beat Stevenson keeper Mack Ferguson to make it 3-1 with 27:19 left in the first half.
Stevenson went back on the offensive following that goal, however, scoring the final eight goals of the first half to take an 11-1 lead into the intermission.
In the second half, Albright got on the board first as the Lions looked to get back into the contest. All-MAC Second Team selection
Kelly Baumann opened the scoring in the second half off an assist from Bass to make it 11-2 with 28:01 left in regulation.
Stevenson responded with two more goals before the Lions went on a run, scoring three consecutive goals. Mela scored the first and third goals on that run sandwiched around Bass' second goal of the game. Cullen assisted on Bass' goal, and
Danielle Carey assisted on Mela's second goal.
Mela finished her rookie campaign with 15 multi-goal games out of Albright's 17 contests. Bass scored multiple goals 11 times. Cullen recorded at least two assists for the seventh time.
Hayley Joyce, who joined Cullen and Baumann on the All-MAC Second Team, made 11 saves. She finished the season with 147 saves, building upon her school record.
