READING, Pa. – The Albright Lions field hockey team was unable to overcome four goals from Lynchburg's Jackie Lerro as they dropped a 5-1 decision to the Hornets at Shirk Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
With the loss, the Lions drop to 0-2 on the season in the pair of non-conference games they have played. Meanwhile, the Hornets improved to 4-0 and completed their weekend sweep of Reading area teams after defeating Alvernia last night.
Albright had trouble keeping Lynchburg out of their own zone early which led to the first of four goals by Lerro in the 18
th minute on a breakaway. A Lions turnover in the box 10 minutes later would lead to the second goal from Lerro to bring to score to 2-0 at halftime. The Hornets held a commanding 15-2 shot advantage in the first half.
Lerro would secure a hat trick just three minutes into the second half when she scored on another breakaway to make the score 3-0. The Lions would then break the shutout in the 47
th minute when senior
Tracy Snyder scored her first goal of the season at the top of the box off a feed from classmate
Kasey Neiderer. Lynchburg, however, would respond with a pair of goals in the 55
th and 58
th minutes other to bring the score to 5-1. Albright was outshout 16-7 in the second half.
Overall, the Hornets held a 31-9 shot advantage for the game and a 15-7 penalty corner advantage. Junior goalkeeper
Aileen Taylor suffered the loss for the Lions after allowing five goals and making 11 saves in nearly 58 minutes. She was relieved by freshman
Brynne Schoppe, who played the final 12:11 and made one save. Hornets goalkeeper Hannah Chapman earned the win after making five saves and allowing one goal in the full 70 minutes.
The Lions will return to action on Wednesday, September 13, when they will travel to face William Paterson for a 7 p.m. start.
