Second Half Surge Lifts Football to Win at Lycoming

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Albright football team came back from a 14-0 deficit in the first half to defeat Lycoming, 21-17, on Saturday afternoon at David Person Field. Mike Jordan led the Albright offensive attack with seven catches for 56 yards and two touchdowns. He's scored two touchdowns in each of Albright's first three games.

Lycoming scored a pair of touchdowns in the first quarter after not finding the end zone in either of its first two games of the season. Quarterback Chase Williams scored on a 37-yard touchdown run less than five minutes into action. Williams then connected with Nick Costello from nine yards out to make it 14-0 Lycoming with 59 seconds left in the opening quarter.

Albright used a 10-play, 67-yard drive late in the second quarter to get on the board. The Lions had a first-and-goal from the Lycoming 5 on the drive, and Chris Dawson carried it four yards to the 1 on first down. Quarterback Alec Vignola was stopped for a loss of a yard on second down, and an incompletion on third down forced the Lions into a decision. They decided to go for it, and Vignola connected with Jordan on a fade pass in the left corner of the end zone to make it 14-7 with 2:20 left in the half.

Lycoming responded in its two-minute offense with a 7-play, 64-yard drive to grab three more points in the final seconds of the period. Jamie Fisher connected on a 23-yard field goal to give Lycoming a 17-7 lead at halftime.

Lycoming got the ball after halftime, but the Lions defense forced a three-and-out to get the ball back. That drive put the Lions back into the end zone as Vignola completed four consecutive passes to four different receivers. After completing passes to Malik Jackson and to Dawson, he hit Milton Cordero for 34 yards to the Lycoming 4. On the very next play, Vignola found Jordan again in the end zone to cut the Lycoming lead to 17-14.

Vignola finished 24-of-42 for 240 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Six of his seven touchdown passes this season have went to Jordan.

The Albright defense responded with another three-and-out. The offense came back with a dominating 14-play, 75-yard drive that ate seven minutes off the clock. On third-and-11 from the Lycoming 14, Vignola hit Jackson for 13 yards and a first down. Two plays later, Dawson plowed in from the 1 to give the Lions their first lead of the day, 21-17. Jackson finished with six catches for 80 yards.

Lycoming had four drive in the fourth quarter. The first three ended in punts. On the fourth drive in the final two minutes, David Sanchez sacked Williams near midfield. That set up a third-and-18 play that gained 10 yards. On fourth down, Trevor Leone forced Williams into a two-yard run that turned the ball over on downs.

Grant Boehler and Nate Steffen led the Albright defense with six tackles. Leone had a sack and a pair of tackles for loss. Steffen also combined with Isaiah Baylor for a sack.

Albright moved to 3-0 for the fifth time in the last nine seasons.

The Lions will look for its fourth straight win to open the season next Saturday in the 67th Annual Rajah Shrine Pretzel Bowl. Albright will host Widener at 1 p.m.
