Long Lifts Albright to Overtime win over Stevenson, 2-1

READING, Pa. – Behind two dramatic goals from senior Amanda Long, the Albright Lions Field Hockey team scored a come-from-behind win over Stevenson in overtime by a score of 2-1 on Saturday evening at Shirk Stadium.

With the win, the Lions improve to 3-3 on the season and 1-0 in MAC Commonwealth Conference play. Meanwhile, the Mustangs fall to 4-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

Both teams traded shots in the first half as neither team was able to break the scoreless tie. Junior goalkeeper Aileen Taylor was able to fend off two shots right in front of the goal in the 6th and 7th minutes, while sophomore Marley Berger had the best chance for the Lions as her close range shot was saved by the Stevenson goalkeeper in the 27th minute. The Mustangs held a slight 5-4 shot advantage in the first half.

Albright turned up the pressure early in the second half which led to a penalty stroke opportunity from sophomore Kaley Donmoyer at the 38:23 minute mark. However, Mustang goalkeeper Kelsey Eure would get the best of Donmoyer by stopping her shot on the left corner of the net. Stevenson carried momentum from the penalty stroke save when they broke the scoreless tie in the 53rd minute thanks to Tanner Ridgely, who scored on a pass through traffic from Sara McVey. Long's heroics began in the 65th minute when she tied the game off a shot from the left wing for her fourth goal of the season.

The Lions outshot the Mustangs 8-5 in the second half and entered their first overtime game of the season. It did not take long for Albright to score in overtime after an initial rush was capped off by Long's second goal of the contest that she buried in the left side of the net. Sophomore Mia Moshang missed the initial shot which made the ball go right to Long for the score.

Overall the Lions held a 13-10 shot advantage for the game and a 12-5 advantage in penalty corners. This was the Lions first overtime game since a loss in the ECAC quartfinals match between Muhlenberg last November, and their first overtime win since beating Wilkes on September 25, 2013.

Taylor earned her second win of the week after making five saves in just over 70 minutes of action. Eure picked up the tough loss after making three saves in just over 70 minutes of play.

Albright will return to action on Wednesday, September 27th when they will host Susquehanna for a non-conference matchup set for 7 p.m.
