READING, Pa. – Behind two second half goals, the Albright Lions women's soccer team rallied to claim a 2-1 win over FDU-Florham in non-conference play on Tuesday night at Shirk Stadium.
With the win, the Lions improve to 5-4 on the season and have now won four of their last five games. Meanwhile, the Devils of the MAC Freedom Conference fall to 6-3 on the season.
Albright controlled play early with multiple chances and keeping the ball in the Devils zone for the majority of the first half. However, it was the Devils that would strike first in the 27
th minute on a goal from Erica Martins. A battle for the ball down the right side drew Lions goalkeeper
Alexis Tunney out of net to potentially stop the ball, but Kristina Ragolia was able to create space behind Tunney to cross the ball over to Martins to knock the ball in the net. The Lions held a 5-4 shot advantage at halftime, but were down 1-0.
With action picking up in the second half, the Lions finally got the break they needed when they were awarded a penalty shot after a yellow card was issued in the box to the Devils. Senior
Emily Saxon was able to beat the Devils goalkeeper for her first goal of the season to tie the score at 1 in the 63
rd minute. Albright would then take the lead at the 77:26 mark when Saxon sent a free kick from about 30 yards out right in front of the net in traffic that junior
Kennedy Lutz was able to get a piece of to knock it into the net for the goal. FDU-Florham presented a late offensive surge, but the Lions were able to pull out the win.
The Devils held a slight 11-9 shot advantage overall, but were only able to put two of them on net for the game. Albright held a sizable 10-2 corner kick advantage.
Tunney was able to earn the win after having to make just one save and allowing one goal in the full 90 minutes of play. Devils goalkeeper Ashley Paulino suffered the loss after making four saves and allowing two goals in the entire 90 minutes.
The Lions will return to action on Saturday, September 30
th when they will open MAC Commonwealth play on the road against Stevenson for a 4:30 pm start.
