OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Albright Lions women's soccer team was unable to overcome a two-goal first half deficit as they dropped their MAC Commonwealth opener to Stevenson on Saturday afternoon, 2-1.
With the loss, the Lions drop to 5-5 overall and 0-1 in MAC Commonwealth play. Meanwhile, the Mustangs improve to 7-3 on the season and 1-0 in MAC Commonwealth play.
Both teams traded scoring chances in the early portion of the first half, including a shot from freshman
Daniella LoBue in the close left wing that was saved by the Mustangs goalkeeper. Stevenson would get on the board in the 22
nd minute when Emily Lord scored in the box after receiving a long pass. The Mustangs added to their lead in the 36
th minute after Lions goalkeeper
Alexis Tunney misplayed the ball, leading to Kellen Wittman recovering the loose ball to score. Albright held a 5-4 shot advantage despite being down 2-0 at the half.
The Lions finished strong with three shot attempts to close the first half, and that play continued into the second half when LoBue scored the first goal of her collegiate career in the 59
th minute to cut the Mustang lead to 2-1. She buried a shot in the box after receiving a pass from senior
Crissy Terraces. Albright nearly tied the game in the 62
nd minute after a corner kick that was headed just wide by senior
Madison Balga. That turned out to be the last best chance for the Lions to tie the game as they were unable to find an equalizer to force overtime.
Albright held a 12-9 shot advantage for the game after outshooting the Mustangs 7-5 in the second half, while both teams finished at an even five corner kicks apiece.
Tunney suffered the loss after tallying five saves and allowing two goals in the full 90 minutes of play. Meanwhile, Stevenson goalkeeper Tiffany McKee earned the win after making five saves and allowing one goal in the entire 90 minutes.
The Lions will return to action on Wednesday, October 4
th when they will host nationally ranked Messiah for a 7 p.m. contest.
