Women's Soccer Fights to Scoreless Tie Against Messiah

READING, Pa. – Facing the defending national runner-up, the Albright Lions women's soccer team valiantly battled to a scoreless tie against the 11th ranked Messiah Falcons in MAC Commonwealth play at Shirk Stadium on Wednesday night.

With the tie, the Lions record stands at 5-5-1 on the season with a 0-1-1 record in MAC Commonwealth play. Meanwhile, the Falcons record stands at 7-1-3 with a 1-0-1 record in conference play. This is the first scoreless tie that Albright has played since last October when they tied Stevenson at home.

The Falcons came out controlling possession early and fired two tough shots on goal within the first 10 minutes that were saved by Lions goalkeeper Alexis Tunney. Messiah had another great chance to break the tie early in the 22nd minute on a shot that sailed just high of the net. The Falcons had a 10-0 shot advantage in the first half. Tunney would make another great save in the 61st minute on a hard shot from the top of the box to keep the game tied at zero. Messiah's next best chance came in the 74th minute when DJ Cole sailed past multiple defenders into the box, but ripped the shot wide left of the goal.

In the first overtime, the Falcons received three corner kick opportunities within a minute of each other but yet again could not find the back of the net. The first shot deep in the box off the initial corner hit the crossbar before the next corner kick ball was headed out of the box by two Lion defenders. Tunney would make one last save on a header in the final minute of the first overtime to send the game to an extra 10 minutes.

Messiah would register just two shots on net in the second overtime as the Lions preserved the scoreless tie. The Falcons held a 24-0 shot advantage for the game and an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks for the contest. Tunney made 10 saves for the Lions in the full 110 minute.

The Lions will return to action on Saturday, October 7th when they will host Lebanon Valley in MAC Commonwealth play at 5:30 p.m.
