Volleyball Splits at Albright Tri-Match

READING, Pa. – The Albright volleyball team earned a split in two matches at the Albright Tri-Match on Saturday afternoon at Bollman Center. The Lions opened the day with a five-set loss to Rutgers-Camden before sweeping Penn State Abington to close the day.

In the five-set loss to Rutgers-Camden, the Lions took the first and third sets, 25-23 and 25-20, respectively. After winning the second set, Rutgers-Camden won the fourth set, 25-19, to force the fifth and deciding set. The Scarlet Raptors led that deciding set, 10-5, before the Lions came back with back-to-back points on kills by Kellie Hill and Bryana Chambers.

Albright was down to match point, trailing 14-10, but managed to score three straight points that included another kill from Hill. Camden managed to get the match point on an error by the Lions to win the set, 15-13, and the match, three games to two.

Hill led all attackers with 18 kills. Morgan Puller finished with seven while Paige Westra and Chambers had six apiece. Becca Davis had 35 digs. Puller and Kaylyn Haan each had 12 digs, and Claudia Guise finished with 38 assists and 10 digs.

In the straight-set victory over Penn State Abington, the Lions hit .435 in the third set as it won 25-20, 25-15 and 25-9. Albright held Abington to -.119 hitting for the match.

The only trouble the Lions faced in the match came in the first set. Albright trailed, 18-13, before scoring seven straight points to take a 20-13 lead. Westra, Guise and Hill each had a kill on that run. Liz Bacovin added a kill later in the set and Westra scored an ace to help clinch the first set.

Westra finished with four of the Lions' eight aces for the match. She also had a team-high eight kills to go along with nine digs. Bacovin and Hill each had five kills as Bacovin hit .444. Davis added 21 more digs while Guise had 21 assists.

Albright moves back into conference play on Wednesday night at Lycoming at 7 p.m.
