OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Albright men's basketball team started Saturday's game at Stevenson with a 15-0 lead as it cruised past the Mustangs, 80-63, in MAC Commonwealth action. Albright held Stevenson scoreless for the first 5:43 of action and without a field goal for the opening 7:07.
The opening run for the Lions started with four straight points from
Fred Rowles. After hitting a free throw on the Lions' opening possession, he followed that with a three pointer to make it 4-0 with 19:03 left.
The score stayed there until
DeJuan Smith scored inside on a feed from Rowles to make it 6-0 at 17:12.
Garrett Oplinger and
Brandon Lindsay made three pointers on Albright's next two possessions to double the lead to 12-0 with 16:03 left. After a Stevenson timeout, a steal by Smith led to another Lindsay three pointer. That staked Albright to a 15-0 lead less than five minutes into action.
Rowles and Smith each recorded double-doubles. Rowles finished with 11 points and 12 rebounds, and Smith had 11 points and 11 rebounds. The other three starters all reached double-digit scoring. Lindsay had a game-high 19 points with eight rebounds. Oplinger scored 12 points, and Dancy had 11.
Stevenson finally got on the board with two free throws from Johnny Rhodes with 14:17 left. After an Oplinger layup pushed the lead back to 15, Stevenson recorded its first field goal of the game on a Kyle Wooldridge jumper with 12:53 to play in the first half.
Despite trailing for the entire half, the Mustangs managed to cut the Albright lead to four points late in the first half after a three-point play by Danzel Wright made it 26-22 with 2:16 remaining.
Jayson Clark scored and Lindsay hit a free throw to send the Lions into the half with a 29-22 lead.
The Lions quickly pushed the lead back into double figures in the second half. Smith and Rowles opened the scoring with three pointers to make it 35-22. Smith scored on a pair of layups to expand the lead to 22 points, 52-30, with 14:04 left.
Stevenson tried to make things interesting late, but it could only cut the lead to 12 with 2:42 to play. Albright responded with the next six points, including four from Dancy.
Albright held Stevenson to just 10.7 percent (3-for-28) from beyond the arc.
Albright swept the season series with Stevenson for the second-straight year and won at Stevenson for the third-straight season.
Albright returns home to face Hood on Wednesday night at 8 p.m.
