FREDERICK, Md. – The Albright Lions women's basketball team cruised to a 70-51 win over Hood in MAC Commonwealth play on Wednesday night behind four players scoring in double-figures.
With the win, the Lions improve to 8-5 on the season with a 3-1 record in MAC Commonwealth play in their first conference game since December 6
th. Meanwhile, the Blazers drop to 4-7 overall with a 1-3 record in conference play.
Senior
Alysha Lofton led the four players in double digits with a game-high 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field. Lofton also added seven rebounds (six offensive), three assists, and four steals in the win. Sophomore
Zaria Mohamed posted a career-high 14 points off the bench for the Lions on 7-of-11 shooting from the field along with seven rebounds and two steals. Senior
Devan Horka nearly missed a double-double with 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field and nine rebounds. Classmate
Nina Mazzarelli tallied 11 points and five rebounds, while
Jane Joyce posted eight points and a game-high eight assists for the Lions.
Hood opened the game with the first basket of the contest to take a 2-0 lead, but would never regain the lead back from that as the Lions reeled off a 14-3 run over the span in five-plus minutes of action to take a 14-5 lead at the 3:46-mark of the first quarter. Albright dominated on defense during the majority of the first quarter by holding the Blazers without a field goal for 5:32 minutes of action. The Lions extended its lead by as many as 10 points during the quarter and eventually held a 19-12 lead at the end of the first. Albright hit the first two baskets of the second quarter and used a 10-2 run during the middle of the quarter to take its largest lead of the half at 33-17 with 2:35 left in the second quarter. The Blazers did outscore the Lions 6-2 in the final two minutes of the half to bring the lead down to 12 at 35-23.
The Lions held their lead around 12 for most of the third quarter before they blew the game open with a 12-2 run in the final 4:36 of the quarter to take a 53-33 lead headed into the fourth quarter. Mohamed scored six of the 12 points during the run after Mazzarelli began the run by scoring the first four points. Hood brought the Lions lead down to 15 after outscoring Albright 8-3 in the first two minutes of the quarter, but the Lions responded to keep the lead around 17 points for most of the final quarter. Albright used an 8-2 run to bring the lead back to 20 at 69-49 before closing out the win with a score of 70-51.
The Lions shot 44.6 percent (29-of-65) from the field and went just 1-of-11 (9.1%) from beyond the arc. Albright went 11-of-17 (64.7%) from the free throw line and held a sizable 48-34 rebounding advantage for the game. The Blzaers shot 31.7 percent (20-of-63) from the field after shooting just 28.1 percent in the first half. Hood went 18.2 (2-of-11) percent from beyond the arc and 9-of-12 (75%) from the free throw stripe. Albright forced 19 Blazer turnovers which led to 15 points and scored 42 points in the paint.
Mia Savoy was the only Hood player to score in double-digures as she led the Blazers with a team-high 12 points and six rebounds.
Albright will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 6th as they will host Lebanon Valley in MAC Commonwealth play at 4 p.m.
