Women's Soccer Drops Overtime Heartbreaker to Arcadia

READING, Pa. – Erin Vander Plaat scored with 2:09 remaining in the first overtime period and the Albright Lions women's soccer team (8-3-1, 2-2 MACC) dropped a 3-2 overtime heartbreaker to Arcadia  (9-2-2, 4-0 MACC) in MAC Commonwealth action on Wednesday night at Shirk Stadium.

Vander Plaat took a feed from Veronica Garcia off a deflection and sent a shot past the dive of Lions' goalie Alexis Tunney to give Arcadia the win.

Albright had tied the game with 7:41 left in regulation on senior Kennedy Lutz's penalty kick after Lauren Haley was dragged down in the box. The goal was Lutz's seventh of the season.

The Knights grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute as Garcia got behind Tunney on a ball over the top and tapped the shot into an open net. Senior Erica Bross responded for the Lions just over three minutes later with a header in the box off a free kick from freshman Autumn Bieber. The goal for Bross was her first since Nov. 12, 2016 vs. Neumann.

In the first minute of the second half, Lutz had a penalty kick denied via a diving save from Arcadia goalie Brianna Williams. Garcia would strike with her second goal of the game less than five minutes later to give the Knights a 2-1 lead for the time being.

Arcadia held a 14-5 edge in shots and a 7-4 advantage in shots on target. Lutz paced the Lions with two shots, while Garcia had six to lead the Knights.

Tunney collected four saves for Albright and Williams had a pair for Arcadia.

The Lions are back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 16 when Stevenson comes to Shirk Stadium for a MAC Commonwealth tilt at 7 p.m.
