READING, Pa. – The Albright Lions field hockey team was unable to overcome a stifling Alvernia defense as they dropped a 3-0 contest to the Golden Wolves on Wednesday afternoon at Shirk Stadium in MAC Commonwealth play.
With the loss, the Lions fall to 6-9 overall on the season and 1-4 in MAC Commonwealth play. Meanwhile, the Golden Wolves improve to 8-7 and 3-2 in conference play.
Alvernia took control of play early on as they tallied five shots in the first five and a half minutes of the game with four going on goal. The Lions got their first shot on the board in the 17
th minute of the game that was saved in front of the net. Senior
Annette Helmandollar then had the Lions best chance of the game when she had her shot saved by a Golden Wolves defender in the 18
th minute. Alvernia then got on the board in 25
th minute when a quick shot in front of the net went off a Lion defenders stick and into the net to make it 1-0. The Golden Wolves finished the first half with a 9-4 shot advantage.
The second half started slow with the Golden Wolves getting the first shot off in the second half at the 41
st minute mark. Alvernia then ripped off two goals in 33 seconds during the 49
th minute to put the game away and go up 3-0. The Lions did not get a shot off in the second half until the 55
th minute of the game and had one last chance to score in the 66
th minute when Helmandollar had her shot saved in the box.
Alvernia held a 14-7 shot advantage for the game with 10 of the shots going on net. The Golden Wolves also held a slight 9-7 edge in penalty corners as well. Sophomore goalkeeper
Brynne Schoppe suffered the loss after making seven saves in the full 70 minutes of the game. Golden Wolves goalkeeper Emma Beamesderfer picked up the win after making one save in 50:50 minutes of action, while Nicole Heinze finished the game for Alvernia with one save.
The Lions return to action on Saturday, October 20
th when they will travel to face Stevenson at 4 p.m. in MAC Commonwealth play.
