Penalty Stroke Lifts Field Hockey over Stevenson in Overtime

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – A penalty stroke goal from junior Marley Berger lifted the Lions to a 3-2 overtime victory on the road against Stevenson in MAC Commonwealth play on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Lions improved to 7-9 overall and 2-4 in MAC Commonwealth play and picked up their second-straight win over Stevenson in overtime after winning 2-1 at Shirk Stadium last season. Meanwhile, the Mustangs drop to 6-10 overall and 2-4 in MAC Commonwealth play.

The Mustangs controlled play early and had two shots in the ninth minute that nearly got on them on the board. The first shot was kicked away by Lions goalkeeper Brynne Schoppe before the next one was sent just wide of the net. Stevenson then had a shot that was denied by junior Mia Moshang before Schoppe came up big again on the next shot after an ensuing penalty corner. The Lions would then get on the board in the 19th minute to make it 1-0 after junior Kaley Donmoyer scored after sophomore Jennifer Crumling found her in front of the goal. Schoppe would make two more saves in the 21st minute to hold the Lions in front at halftime.

Stevenson came right out in the second half and tied the game at one just 1:14 in before a huge run of chances followed. The Mustangs nearly took the lead in the 45th minute when Moshang just knocked out a Stevenson shot, and then missed a penalty stroke opportunity after Schoppe made the save. However, Stevenson finally took the lead in the 50th minute on a goal that was set up from a penalty corner. The Lions would strike back just 2:31 later on a goal from Jennifer Crumling after she tapped in a cross pass from Donmoyer. Despite the goal, the Mustangs continued to hound the Lions end in the second half. Moshang again came up with her third defensive save in the 68th minute to preserve the tie and head into overtime.

In overtime, the Mustangs had a chance to win the game but the shot hit the side of the cage in the 74th minute. A rush from the Lions in the 79th minute resulted in the penalty corner opportunity that won the game for the Lions.

The Mustangs held a sizable 27-8 shot advantage after out-shooting the Lions 18-3 in the second half. Stevenson also held a 14-10 advantage in penalty corners after receiving 12 in the second half. Schoppe played valiantly in net after making a career-high 16 saves in the full 78:01. Mustang goalkeeper Kelsey Eure suffered the loss after making two saves in the entire 78:01.

The Lions will return to action on Wednesday, October 24th when they will host Widener in MAC Commonwealth play at 7 p.m.
