Football Ends Season with 30-24 Loss in Double Overtime to LVC

ANNVILLE, Pa. – The Albright Lions football team concluded its season with a 30-24 loss in double overtime to Lebanon Valley on a cold Saturday afternoon in MAC play.

The Lions end the year with their first winless season since 1992 at 0-10 overall and 0-8 in MAC play. Meanwhile, the Dutchmen finish their season with two straight wins at 2-8 overall and 2-6 in MAC play.

Junior quarterback Jimmy Lahay finished the game 21-of-37 for 302 yards and three touchdowns with one interception. Lahay will finish the season with 2,228 yards passing and 21 touchdown passes. The freshman duo of Tony Thorpe and Malik Bootman combined for 238 yards on the ground with Thorpe leading the way with 79 yards. Senior wide receiver Kyle Dickerson led the Lions in his final game with 187 yards receiving on 12 catches and two touchdown receptions. He finishes the season with 1,063 receiving yards and 13 receiving touchdowns. He scored a total of 92 points for the season which is the seventh most in a single-season in program history.

The Lions struck first in the contest after they forced a Dutchmen punt to start the game as Lahay found Dickerson for a 61-yard touchdown completion on 3rd and 4 with 9:57 left in the first quarter. Each team traded punts on the windy afternoon on the next few series before the Dutchmen made it into Lions territory to begin the second quarter. However, the Lions defense held strong and forced another Lebanon Valley punt. Pinned at their own one-yard line, Thorpe broke for a 23 yard run to give the Lions some breathing room. Lahay then found Dickerson again deep into Dutchmen territory, but the play was called back on an ineligible man downfield penalty. Albright was unable to get anything going after the penalty and punted back to the Dutchmen. Lebanon Valley responded to tie the game at 7 with a 10-play 64 yard drive that ended on a six-yard run with 4:04 left in the first half. The Lions marched to the Dutchmen 41-yard line before a sack and two incompletions ended the threat and the score went into halftime tied at seven.

Albright started well on their opening drive of the second half as they made it to the Dutchmen 41-yard line following a 26-yard pass from Lahay to junior wide receiver Zack Miller. However, an offensive pass interference penalty backed the Lions up before Lahay was intercepted to end the drive. The Dutchmen took the interception back to the Albright 38-yard line and made quick work of the drive by scoring on just four plays to go up 14-7 at the 10:29-mark of the third quarter. Lahay and Dickerson connected again twice on the Lions next drive as they Lions tied the score at 14 following a 36-yard touchdown completion. The Dutchmen used a 10-play 51 yard drive to go up 17-14 following a 23-yard field goal and would take a 24-14 lead on the final play of the third quarter following a 58-yard completion on 2nd and 26.

Needing a touchdown, Lahay led a nine-play 70-yard drive to make it a 24-21 game with 11:35 left in the second half following a 26-yard reception from freshman receiver Jory Cole. The Dutchmen drove again into Lions territory on their next drive but came away without points after a drop on 4th and four from the Albright 37-yard line. Albright drove the ball to the Dutchmen two-yard line and tied the game at 24 following senior kicker Kevin Goetz hitting a 20-yard field goal which was his first of the season. The Dutchmen drove into field goal range but missed a potential game-winning 45-yard field goal with 18 seconds left to send the game into overtime.

In overtime, the Dutchmen got the ball first and faced a 3rd and goal from the two-yard line. The Lions came up big by stuffing the Dutchmen on two straight plays to hold them scoreless. Needing just points to win, the Lions made it to the 21-yard line on the first two plays of their possession before the drive imploded with an intentional grounding penalty and unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the 3rd down play. An incompletion on 4th and 31 sent the game to a second overtime. Albright made it to the one yard line on their second overtime possession but were unable to score a touchdown. Goetz then pushed a 20-yard field goal wide right which allowed the Dutchmen to end the game with a 20-yard touchdown run on the second play of their possession.

Freshman linebacker Sam Viera led the Lions defense with 16 tackles (11 solo), 3.0 TFL, and one sack. Three other Lions each tallied nine tackles.
