Cold Shooting Costs Women's Hoops in Loss to Moravian

READING, Pa. – The Moravian Greyhounds (1-0) built an early first quarter lead en route to a 58-45 win over the Albright Lions women's basketball team (0-1) in the season opener for both teams on Thursday night at the Bollman Center in Reading.

Freshman Shaunna Bruker hit a layup to tie things at eight apiece for the Lions with 3:14 left in the opening quarter before Emily Walls responded with a three-pointer on the other end for Moravian to kickstart an 11-2 run for the visitors over the remainder of the quarter. The Greyhounds shot 7-of-13 (53.8%) from the field in the opening quarter.

Bruker posted a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds to pace the Lions, while junior center Zaria Mohamed added 13 points and sophomore guard Alli Marcus chipped in with five points and five assists.

Karlie Brogan had 21 points on 8-of-14 shooting to lead all scorers and Maddie Capuano added 19 points of her own as the duo combined to score 40 of Moravian's 58 points. Brogan also grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Greyhounds.

Moravian took a 19-10 lead into the second quarter and stretched the lead to as many as 14 with a three-pointer from Capuano at the 3:08 mark, but the Lions cut the deficit back to 10 at 30-20 heading into the locker room after Marcus sank a layup in the final minute.

Tyis Mullen hit a three-pointer at the 4:36 mark of the third quarter to cap a 12-2 run for Moravian and make it a 42-22 game. Albright wouldn't go quietly however as head coach Janice Luck's squad closed the quarter on a 7-0 run capped by a triple from Marcus with 0:16 remaining. Mohamed scored 6 of her 13 points in the fourth quarter as the two teams scored 16 points apiece in the final stanza.

Albright shot 19-of-52 (36.5%) from the field on the night and 2-of-10 (20%) from beyond the arc, while Moravian shot at a 35% clip (21-of-60) from the floor and 43% (7-of-16) from deep. The Lions committed 21 turnovers in the contest which led to 22 Moravian points. The hosts held a slim 40-39 edge on the boards led by Bruker's game-high 11 rebounds.

Albright is back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 13 when they travel to Neumann to battle the Knights in non-conference action at 6 p.m.
