OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Albright Lions men's basketball team let a late lead in the second half slip away before eventually falling in heartbreaking fashion to Stevenson by a score of 96-95 in overtime on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, the Lions drop to 3-6 overall and 2-2 in MAC Commonwealth. Meanwhile, the Mustangs improve to 7-1 overall and 3-0 in conference play.
Sophomore
Isaiah Harris put forth a career day for the Lions as he registered a career-high 29 points on 12-of-14 shooting along with 15 rebounds. Harris was one of three sophomores that scored 20-plus points on the afternoon as classmates
Samuel Majekodunmi added 24 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field, while
Sidney Brown posted a career-high 21 points behind going 4-of-8 from beyond the arc. Junior
DeLascio Dancy recorded 13 points and a game-high five steals.
The Lions quickly fell behind 5-0 in the opening two minutes of the game before Brown hit a three-pointer at the 17:34-mark to get Albright on the board. The Mustangs would go up 10-5 at the 15:49-mark before the Lions used a 7-2 run to tie the score at 12 at the 12:45-mark of the first half. During the run, Harris scored all seven points for the Lions. Seven unanswered points from the Mustangs brought the score to 19-12 and they maintained a seven-point advantage at 21-14 with 7:46 left in the first half. Five-straight points from Majekodunmi cut the Mustang lead down to 21-19, but the Lions were unable to take the lead for the rest of the first half. However, the Lions began gaining momentum in the final two minutes of the second half as they out-scored the Mustangs 6-2 down the stretch to make it a 36-33 game at the half after the Mustangs held a seven-point lead at the 2:27-mark.
Each team started the second half hot as they combined for 18 points in the first 1:56 of the period. Baskets continued to be traded before Brown gave the Lions their first lead of the game on a three-pointer at 51-50 with 14:13 left in the second half. Stevenson took a 53-51 lead at the 13:55-mark, but then the Lions used a 13-2 run to take a 64-55 lead with 9:56 left in the second half. In the 3:44 span, the Lions went 5-of-6 from the field and held the Mustangs without a field goal for a span of 4:13. Albright continued their hot-shooting as they took their largest lead of the game at 72-59 with 7:33 left in the second half after Harris made back-to-back lay-ups. The Lions seemed to have the game in hand as they took a 12-point lead at 81-69 with 3:06 left in the second half, but then the Mustangs made a miraculous run to force overtime on a 17-5 run in the final three minutes. Three turnovers and Stevenson going 5-of-6 from the field tied the game at 83 with 43 seconds left in regulation. Majekodunmi then hit a three-pointer to give the Lions an 86-83 lead with 14 seconds left and forced a Mustangs timeout. Stevenson missed the initial game-tying three-pointer with six seconds left before an offensive rebound off the shot led to the game-tying basket with 0.6 seconds left.
Albright quickly scored the first four points of overtime to go up 90-86 at the 4:12-mark before the Mustangs quickly erased the deficit to tie the game at 90 at the 3:20-mark. Lay-ups from Harris and Dancy gave the Lions a 94-92 advantage with 1:33 left in overtime, and would take a 95-92 lead with 31 seconds left after Majekodunmi split a pair of free throws. Stevenson scored a lay-up to make it 95-94 and forced a turnover on the next Lions possession which led to the eventual game-winning basket with 17 seconds left. The Lions were then unable to get a shot off on their final possession.
The Lions shot 32-of-61 from the field (52.5%) after shooting a scorching 72 percent in the second half. Albright also went 9-of-19 (47.4%) from beyond the arc and 22-of-32 (68.8%) from the free throw line. The Lions also held a 42-36 rebounding advantage. Meanwhile, the Mustangs shot 46.8 percent (36-of-77) from the field and 34.6 percent (9-of-26) from beyond the arc. Stevenson went 15-of-22 (68.5%) from the free throw line and scored 30 points off 23 Lions turnovers. Montague Wright led the Mustangs with a team-high 22 points, while Sean Mayberry scored 18 points off the bench.
Albright will return to action one week from now on Saturday, December 15
th when they will host Messiah at 3 p.m.
