OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Junior center
Zaria Mohamed recorded a career-high 24 points and 13 rebounds and the Albright Lions women's basketball team (4-6, 1-3 MACC) used a big first quarter to pick up a 66-57 victory over the Stevenson Mustangs (3-6, 0-3 MACC) on Saturday afternoon at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
The win snaps a three-game skid for the Lions.
Mohamed's 24 points tops her previous career-high of 18, which had been done on two occasions this season. The 13 rebounds also represent a career-high, surpassing her previous career-best of 12 that had been set on Jan. 31, 2018 vs. Hood.
Mohamed's double-double paced Albright offensively, while junior guard
Lauren Killion added 17 points and freshman guard
Shaunna Bruker chipped in with seven points and eight rebounds.
Denia Campbell led the Mustangs with 15 points and was joined in double figures by Hannah Crist (14 points) and Olivia Coleman (12 points).
The Lions came storming out of the gate and a Mohamed jumper made it an 8-0 game at the 7:32 mark of the first quarter. Stevenson cut the lead to 10-4 on a Coleman layup, but
Alli Marcus responded with a layup of her own on the other end to kickstart a 15-4 Albright run over the remainder of the quarter and a layup from freshman
Gabby Boggs gave the visitors a 25-8 edge. Head coach
Janice Luck's squad stretched the lead to as many as 22 on an
Amina Rauf layup at the 1:10 mark of the second quarter and the Lions took a 35-18 lead into the locker room.
Stevenson was able to cut the lead to nine on a couple of different occasions in the third quarter and trailed 48-39 before consecutive layups from Mohamed and Killion stretched the lead back to double digits. Albright held a 56-45 lead following a layup from Killion with 5:59 to play, but the Mustangs wouldn't go quietly and an ensuing 8-2 run capped by a basket from Brandi Hall brought them within five at 58-53 with 3:47 remaining. The Lions answered by scoring the next six points and a pair of free throws from Mohamed stretched the lead back to 11 in the final minute.
Albright shot 28-of-69 (40.6%) from the floor and 3-of-12 (25%) from beyond the arc, while limiting Stevenson to 30.8% shooting (20-of-65) and 21.7% (5-of-23) from deep. The Lions also hit all seven of their attempts from the charity stripe.
The Lions are back in action on Saturday, Dec. 15 when they return home to host Messiah at the Bollman Center at 1 p.m.
