ARLINGTON, Va. – Behind a pair of hat-tricks, the Albright Lions men's lacrosse team rallied to win their first game of the 2018 season against Marymount by a score of 9-7 on Wednesday night.
With the win, the Lions rebound from Saturday's opening loss to improve to 1-1 on the season. Meanwhile, the Saints drop to 1-1 on the season after winning their opening game.
The Saints came out strong in the first period by tallying the first three goals, while holding a sizable 8-3 shot advantage. Freshman
James Gorman began the Lions comeback with a pair of goals to open the second quarter to cut the Marymount lead down to 3-2 with 12:26 left in the first half. After the Saints responded with a goal to make it 4-2, the Lions roared back to tie the game at halftime with goals by freshman
Ethan Gain and
Alex Miller.
Gorman completed his hat trick to open the third quarter, while giving the Lions their first lead of the game at 5-4 at the 6:52-mark. The Saints countered with a goal to tie the game at five, but senior
Gerald Ringgold came back with his first goal of the season to give the Lions a 6-5 lead in the first nine seconds of the fourth quarter. Marymount came back with two straight goals to take a 7-6 lead, but Albright made a game-winning run of goals with three in a row to take the 9-7 road win. Gain completed his hat trick with the first two goals which included the game winner up a man, and senior
Nick Tonno put the finishing touches on with the final goal of the game.
The Saints held a 37-28 shot advantage for the game, but the Lions had a 20-17 advantage of shots going on net. The teams each had 29 ground balls, while the Saints held a slight 11-9 advantage in the faceoff circle.
Gorman and Gain each tallied three goals and one assist to lead the offense, and Gain posted four ground balls as well. Ringgold and classmate
JJ Boliaux led the Lions with five ground balls apiece. Senior goalkeeper
Ryan Aler earned his first win of the season after making 10 saves, while Saints goalkeeper Grey Clarkson took the loss after making 11 saves. Marymount had three players each tally two goals.
The Lions will return to action on Wednesday, February 28
th when they will host Shenandoah for their home opener at 4 p.m.
