READING, Pa. – Behind two home runs and five RBIs from junior
Jeff Yordy, the Albright Lions baseball team earned a 5-3 comeback win over Stevenson in MAC Commonwealth play at Kelchner Field on Thursday afternoon.
With the win, the Lions improve to 6-5 overall with a 1-3 record in MAC Commonwealth play. Meanwhile, the Mustangs drop to 10-9 overall with a 2-4 record in conference play.
Yordy started the scoring for the Lions in the bottom of the first inning with his first home run of the day, a two-run shot, following a single from sophomore Jimmy Gentry to make it 2-0 Albright. Lions starting pitcher
Matt Fisher escaped the top of the second after the Mustangs had runners on first and third base with two outs, but then surrendered a leadoff home run in the top of the third to make it a 2-1 Lions lead. The Mustangs stranded two more runners in the top of the third before tying the game at two in the top of the fifth on a two-out RBI double. After the teams then traded 1-2-3 innings that went into the seventh inning, the Mustangs would take a 3-2 lead following a Lions pitching change off an RBI double. Logan Pennypacker reaching on a hit by pitch. Following a fielder's choice that left runners on first and second, Yordy came through with a go-ahead three-run home run to give the Lions a 5-3 lead. Sophomore pitcher
Will Tokarski then closed out the game for the Lions in the ninth by recording the final three outs with just one walk.
Yordy's five RBIs match a career-high that he set in 2016 against Gwynedd Mercy. Gentry finished the game going 1-for-2 with two runs scored, and sophomore
Logan Adams went 2-of-3 from the plate as well. Fisher went 6.1 innings for the Lions and allowed three earned runs on 10 hits and struck out six with just one walk. Tokarski earned the win after pitcing 2.2 shutout innings in relief and struck out three, while allowing just one hit.
The Lions will conclude their three-game series with Stevenson tomorrow, March 29
th when they will head down to Stevenson for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
