Aler Sets Single Game Saves Record in Loss to Stevenson

READING, Pa. – Despite senior goalkeeper Ryan Aler setting a new program record for saves in a single game, the Albright Lions men's lacrosse team dropped a 14-3 contest to Stevenson in MAC Commonwealth play on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, the Lions drop to 3-6 on the season with a 1-1 record in MAC Commonwealth play. Meanwhile, the Mustangs won their third straight game to improve to 3-5 overall with a 2-0 record in MAC Commonwealth play.

The Lions got off to a great start by opening the scoring on a two-man advantage at the 13:32-mark of the first quarter. Freshman Carson Babcock tallied the goal on a pass from behind the net from classmate James Gorman. Stevenson responded to tie the game at one with 11:50 left in the first quarter, but the Lions defense held strong for the majority of the first quarter. The Mustangs finally broke the tie at the 1:13-mark of the first quarter, and would extend its lead at the 12:48-mark of the second quarter. Senior Andrew Cox then cut the Mustangs lead to one at 3-2 with 6:47 left in the second quarter after he received a pass at midfield and broke through the Stevenson defense. Unfortunately for the Lions, the Mustangs strung together three straight goals to take a 6-2 lead at halftime.

Gorman gave the Lions some life to open the second half as he scored at the 13:21-mark following a successful clear from senior JJ Boliaux. However, that would be the final goal of the game for the Lions as the Mustangs ripped off eight straight goals in the final two quarters of the game. Aler valiantly held his own in net for the Lions by recording a program record 28 saves in the loss after facing 42 shots on net. The previous record was held by Jordan DiZenzo in 2013 when he made 24 saves against Stevenson as well.

In total, the Mustangs held a dominant 68-20 shot advantage in the game, and a 42-12 shot advantage on net.  Stevenson held a 39-17 advantage in ground balls, and went a staggering 18-of-19 in the faceoff circle. Gorman led the Lions with two points on a goal and assist each, while Cox, Babcock, and Boliaux each tallied a point. Mustangs goalkeeper Sam Ross earned the win after making eight saves and allowing three goals in 57:07 of action.

The Lions will return to action in exactly one week on Saturday, April 7th when they will continue MAC Commonwealth play against Arcadia at 1 p.m.
