READING, Pa. – Behind a staggering nine goals and 11 points from sophomore
Kelly Baumann, the Albright Lions women's lacrosse team scored a non-conference win over McDaniel on a cold Thursday evening at Shirk Stadium.
With the win, the Lions improve to 3-2 on the season and snap a two-game losing streak from last week. Meanwhile, the Green Terror of the Centennial Conference fall to 3-2 overall in the early portion of the season.
Baumann scored the most goals and points in a game since Kim Harkins scored a school record 10 goals and 12 points against Lancaster Bible in the program's debut season in 2012. Despite the combined 26 goals, both teams started slow offensively in the cold conditions as the Green Terror scored the first goal of the game at the 18:40-mark of the first half. Baumann then responded with her first of many goals on the evening five minutes later to tie the game at one with 13:33 left in the first half. McDaniel took the lead back just over a minute later to lead 2-1, but then the Lions took complete control of the game with 10 unanswered goals to take an 11-2 lead at halftime. The first four goals of the run came within a span of 2:59 seconds which started with a goal from freshman
Tristin Konen off a pass from Baumann at the 11:59-mark. Senior
Casey Stocker then scored 35 seconds later to give the Lions a 3-2 lead. Baumman then ripped her second goal of the game at the 9:56-mark of the first half, and was followed by junior
Sophie Bass with her first goal of the game just 56 seconds later on a second chance shot. Bass would extend the Albright lead to 6-2 at the 7:30-mark of the first half off a free position shot. Konen then tallied the Lions next three goals to help Albright take a 9-2 lead with just 1:44 left in the first half. Baumann recorded goals three and four to cap the 10-goal run in the final minute of the game to leave the score at 11-2
The Green Terror came out strong to start the second half with two goals in under the first two minutes to quickly cut the Lions advantage to 11-4. But Baumann responded with her fifth goal of the game at the 24:40-mark of the second half, and sixth goal at the 16:20-mark to put the Lions advantage back to nine at 13-4. Baumann scored her seventh goal shortly after a Green Terror goal to make it 14-5 Lions, and then her eighth goal off an assist from Bass at the 11:19-mark to bring the score to 15-5. Baumann then capped her night with her ninth and final goal of the game at the 3:28-mark before Bass scored the Lions final goal in the last minute of play to complete her hat trick.
The Lions held a 32-25 advantage in shots, and 25-19 advantage in shots on goal. Albright held a slight 22-21 advantage in ground balls, while the Green Terror held a 16-12 advantage in draw controls. Along with Baumann's performance, Konen tallied four goals, and Bass posted four points with three goals and one assist. Freshman goalkeeper
Terae Mason picked up the win after making 10 saves in the full 60 minutes, while the Green Terror had two goalkeepers play and Elizabeth Collyer suffered the loss after starting the game.
Albright will return to action on Tuesday, March 13
th when they will face Utica at Tierny Field in the US Lacrosse headquarters for a 5 p.m. start.
