Baseball Unable to Overcome Knights Homers in DH Sweep

READING, Pa. – The Albright baseball team was swept in their MAC Commonwealth home doubleheader at Kelchner Field this afternoon by Arcadia, as the Knights took game one by an 11-4 final before defeating the Lions 8-3 in game two.

With the losses, the Lions drop to 10-14 overall with a 4-11 record in MAC Commonwealth play. Meanwhile, the Knights improve 19-8 overall and 10-3 overall in conference play.

After a scoreless first inning, the Lions escaped a jam in the top of the second by throwing out a Knights runner trying to score on a single with two outs in the inning. Senior Noah Beebe then carried momentum into the bottom of the second by leading off the inning with a home run to give the Lions an early 1-0 lead. Sophomore Logan Pennypacker followed by manufacturing the Lions second run on a walk and two stolen bases. Pennypacker was able to score on his steal of third base due to a throwing error by the Knights catcher. However, that lead was short-lived as the Knights countered with four runs on two hits and one error that all came with two outs. The Knights got runs on a two-run single and a two-run home run on back-to-back at-bats. Junior Jeff Yordy then brought the Lions within one run in the bottom of the third on an RBI double to score sophomore Logan Adams, who singled and stole a base prior. Arcadia continued to play long ball in the top of the fourth with back-to-back home runs inning to go up 6-3. Two more Lions throwing errors would force in another Knights run to put them up 7-3.

The Lions missed an opportunity to cut into the lead after they left the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth, but did so in the bottom of the fifth after Yordy homered for the second straight game. Once again, the Knights countered any Lions advance with more runs as they scored three more in the top of the sixth to go up 10-4. Arcadia then put their final run on the board in the top of the seventh on an RBI single that followed a double. Yordy led the Lions in game one by going 2-of-4 with two RBIs and one run scored. Junior pitcher Daron Pijanowski was saddled with the loss after going 2.2 innings and allowing four runs (two earned) on four hits, while walking three batters. Freshman Kyle Smith followed by pitching four innings and allowing six runs (two earned) on four hits, while striking out two. Arcadia pitcher Luke Hohenstein earned the win after pitching four innings in relief, while allowing one earned run on two hits, and striking out one with one walk.

In game two, the Knights scored in each of the first three innings to go up 4-0 in the contest. They manufactured a run on a fielder's choice in the first before tallying the second run on a RBI double in the second. Arcadia then got a two-out two-run home run in the top of the third to finish the scoring run. Albright was able to cut into the lead in the bottom of the third with a RBI double from Beebe, and in the bottom of the fourth on a RBI groundout from junior Austin Roth to make it 4-2. Junior Joe Suppa started the inning by reaching on a walk, and then stole second before advancing to third on a wild pitch. Arcadia then led off the top of the fifth with another home run to make it 5-2, and scored two more runs in the inning on an error following a single to centerfield. Beebe would cut into the Knights lead with his second home run of the doubleheader in the bottom of the fifth to make it 7-3, but that was the last run the Lions scored on the day. Arcadia added one more run in the top of the sixth before closing out the doubleheader sweep.

Beebe led the Lions in game two by going 3-of-4 with two RBIs, and Adams added two hits from the plate as well. Sophomore Nick Dinnocenti suffered the loss after allowing six runs (five earned) on nine hits, while striking out two in four innings of work. Adams relieved him and allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits in 1.1 innings. Freshman Ryan Kalinich pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief after Adams, and struck out one batter. Arcadia starting pitcher Rob Litchenberger earned the win after pitching four innings, and allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits in addition to striking out four. Nine home runs were hit between the two games, with six of them coming from the Knights.

The Lions will return to action on Monday, April 16th when they will host Elizabethtown in non-conference play at 4 p.m.
