Donohue, Mason Set Single Season Records in Loss to Messiah

GRANTHAM, Pa. – Seven straight goals in the second half doomed the Albright Lions women's lacrosse team as they suffered a 14-7 loss to No. 12 Messiah on Saturday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth play.

With the loss, the Lions see their four-game win streak snapped as they fall to 10-5 overall with a 4-2 mark in MAC Commonwealth play. Meanwhile, the Falcons maintained their hold of first place in the conference with a 12-3 overall record and 7-0 mark in conference play.

The Falcons put the Lions in an early 2-0 deficit as they opened the game with a free position shot goal before tallying the second one at the 23:49-mark of the first half. Freshman Tristan Konen quickly answered back on the second goal by scoring at the 22:28-mark. Junior Sophie Bass then tied the game at two at the 19:43-mark after senior Corinne Donohue found her to tie the Lions single season assist record. Messiah took the lead back at the 15:33-mark of the first half, but once again the Lions answered on a goal from sophomore Kelly Baumann to tie the game at three at the 10:17-mark. On the goal, Donohue picked up her second assist of the day to set the single season assist record. The Falcons took the lead back at the 7:02-mark, and added to its lead at the 5:17-mark. However, the most crushing goal for the Lions came with three seconds left in the half as the Falcons scored on a man-up opportunity to make it 6-3 at halftime.

Messiah scored the opening goal of the second half, but the Lions came back quick as sophomore Devon Mela scored at the 26-minute mark to make it 7-4. Messiah then put the game away with seven straight goals over an 11-minute span to go up 14-4. Four of the Falcon goals during the run came on free position shot goals. Konen ended the run at the 7:16-mark with her second goal of the game after Donohue found her in shooting space. The goal became a part of three straight Lions goals that ended the game as Bass and Baumann each picked up another goal to bring the final score to 14-7.

The Falcons outshot the Lions 40-29 overall, and 29-19 in shots on goal. Messiah also held a 24-19 advantage in ground balls, and a 13-10 advantage in draw control wins. The Falcons also went a perfect 17-of-17 on clears, while the Lions went 15-of-21. Konen, Bass, and Baumann each tallied two goals, while Donohue picked up three assists. Freshman goalkeeper Terae Mason suffered the loss despite doing everything she could to keep the Lions in the game. She matched her season-high of 15 saves to set the Lions single season record in saves for a season. The Falcons used a pair of goalkeepers as back-up Amber Orner earned the win after making four saves. Courtney Wagner led Messiah's offense with seven points on four goals and three assists.

The Lions will return to action on Wednesday, April 25th as they will host Widener in MAC Commonwealth play at 7 p.m. for their final regular season home game.
