READING, Pa. – The Albright Lions men's lacrosse team saw its season come to an end on Saturday afternoon as they fell 7-5 to Lebanon Valley in MAC Commonwealth play at Shirk Stadium on senior day.
With the loss, the Lions finish the season 5-10 overall with a 3-5 record in MAC Commonwealth play. Meanwhile, the Dutchmen improve to 9-7 overall and 4-4 in conference play to slide into the MAC Commonwealth Tournament as the No. 5 seed.
The Dutchmen jumped on the scoreboard quickly on their first offensive possession to take a 1-0 lead at the 13:51-mark following a Lions turnover after a faceoff win. Albright came back just three minutes later to tie the game at one on a goal that featured a pair of seniors on the points.
Nick Tonno grabbed the goal after
JJ Boliaux found him just in front of the crease. The Lions then could not cash in on a man-up advantage just over halfway through the first quarter which set up the Dutchmen to take the lead back at the 4:53-mark. Lebanon Valley would extend its lead at the 10:45-mark in the second quarter to make it 3-1 before making it a 4-1 game at the 4:45-mark. The Lions began to climb back from the Dutchmen's largest advantage at the game with a man-up goal from sophomore
Jack Bobel just 35 seconds after the Dutchmen goal. Momentum then began to seem it was swinging fully to the Lions with 27 seconds left before halftime when freshman
James Gorman ripped a goal to make it a 4-3 game. However, the Dutchmen won the following faceoff and immediately charged down to the field and scored with 14 seconds left in the half to make it 5-3.
Tonno would get the Lions started on a positive note in the second half by scoring just 1:16 into the third quarter to cut the Dutchmen lead back down to one at 5-4. Once again the Lions were unable to get consecutive goals which allowed the Dutchmen to take advantage with a goal at the 4:17-mark to make it a two-goal game again. Freshman
Shane Early responded just over a minute and half later to make it 6-5 before the Dutchmen scored what turned out to be the final goal of the game with one minute left in the third quarter. The Lions controlled play for the majority of the fourth quarter, but Dutchmen goalkeeper Cam Epple stood tall in net with a number of saves on tough shots from the Lions. Albright then had its last two offensive possessions of the game end in turnovers to thwart any potential comeback.
The Dutchmen held a slight 29-23 shot advantage for the game, while each team each tallied 27 shots on goal. The Lions held advantages in ground balls at 32-28 and went 10-of-16 in the faceoff circle, but the Dutchmen went 23-of-23 in clear attempts. Tonno led the team with two goals, while Gorman tallied two points to cap an impressive freshman season. Bobel and Early each posted goals, while freshman
Connor Graser led the team with five ground balls and three caused turnovers. Senior goalkeeper
Ryan Aler suffered the loss in the final game of his Albright career and made 10 saves. Epple earned the win by making 12 saves in net.
