ANNVILLE, Pa. – The Albright Lions women's lacrosse team was unable to overcome nine second half goals from Lebanon Valley as they suffered a 12-8 loss to the Dutchmen on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, the Lions conclude the regular season at 11-6 overall and 5-3 in the MAC Commonwealth. Meanwhile, the Dutchmen secured home field advantage over the Lions in the semifinal round of the MAC Commonwealth Tournament with a 12-4 record overall and a 7-1 record in conference play.
Lebanon Valley opened the scoring just 1:03 into the game to take an early 1-0 lead following a turnover in the Lions zone. Senior
Corinne Donohue would respond at the 24:05-mark to tie the game at one before sophomore
Kelly Baumann gave the Lions their first lead of the game at the 21:23-mark. The Dutchmen tied the game at two on their next offensive possession, and would take the lead back at 3-2 with 15:20 left in the first half. Sophomore
Devon Mela then struck back for the Lions just over a minute later to tie the game at three. The Lions would close the first half with a huge amount of momentum with two goals to take a 5-3 lead at halftime. Donohue scored her second goal of the game at the 2:31-mark just after a yellow card was given to the Dutchmen before Baumann tallied her second goal of the with 53 seconds left in the half.
The Dutchmen wasted little time to open the scoring in the second half as they scored 16 seconds in after winning the opening draw control to make it 5-4. Lebanon Valley would tie the game at the 24:53-mark of the second half before taking the lead for good with a goal at the 19:58-mark. Two more Dutchmen goals came 56 seconds apart at the 18:03 and 17:07-marks before the final goal of a six goal run to begin the second half came at the 15:57-mark to bring the score to 9-5. Senior
Sydney Nankervis ended the run with a goal at the 14:28-mark before a free position goal five minutes later made it a four goal advantage for the Dutchmen again at 10-6. The Lions would make one last charge at the Dutchmen with goals from junior
Sophie Bass and Baumann cut the lead down to 10-8 at the 6:01-mark. Unfortunately for the Lions, the Dutchmen closed the game out with back-to-back goals to seal the win.
The Lions held a 33-27 shot advantage for the game, and a 23-19 advantage in shots on goal. Albright also held advantages in ground balls at 19-18 and draw control wins at 10-9, but went just 6-of-16 on clear attempts for the game. Baumann led the Lions with three goals as she stands just five away from setting the Lions single-season program record for goals in a season. Terae Mason suffered the loss after making seven saves, while Dutchmen goalkeeper Leah Franklin played a major role in the comeback by making 15 saves.
Albright will head right back to Lebanon Valley on Wednesday, April 28
th as they will face the Dutchmen in the semifinals of the MAC Commonwealth Tournament at a time to be determined.
