Softball Swept by Arcadia in Doubleheader

GLENSIDE, Pa. – The Albright Lions softball team dropped a pair of games in its final MAC Commonwealth doubleheader of the season against Arcadia on Saturday afternoon.

The Knights won game one 11-0 before taking game two by a score of 11-1, both games ended in the 5th inning due to the softball run rule. With the losses, the Lions conclude their season with a 14-19 overall record and a 5-11 record in conference play. Meanwhile, the Knights locked up the no. 1 seed in the MAC Commonwealth tournament and improve to 22-12 overall with 12-4 record in conference play.

Arcadia jumped on the Lions quickly in the bottom of the first as they scored three runs on four hits to take a 3-0 lead early in game one. Two of the Knights runs came with two outs after a RBI groundout drove in the first run. The Knights then blew open the game in the bottom of the second by scoring eight runs on six hits and one error, while sending 11 players to the plate. The inning began with a ground out before Arcadia scored two runs with one out, and six runs with two outs behind a three-run homer. Junior Stephany Courtney got the Lions first hit of the game in the top of the fourth with one out before sophomore Camille Sears followed with a single of her own. The Lions were unable to advance the runners any further before being retired in order in the top of the fifth to end the game. Sears was saddled with the loss after allowing eight runs (four earned) on 10 hits with one strikeout in 2.2 innings. Freshman Lynsie Grant relieved Sears and allowed three unearned runs on three hits with two strikeouts in the final 1.1 innings. Arcadia pitcher Mary Pat Murray earned the shutout win after allowing just two hits with two strikeouts in the full five innings.

Game two started out better for the Lions as they got a double from Courtney and a walk from junior Stephanie Pomante to put two runners on with two outs. Unfortunately for the Lions, a strikeout ended the frame. The Knights then used another big inning in the bottom of the second to jump out to a 6-0 lead. Arcadia batted around in the inning as they started the frame with back-to-back home runs. The Lions then got their first run of the day in the top of the third on a RBI single with sears. Sophomore Jessica Rodriguez reached on a fielder's choice after a single from senior Zoe Robertson, and Courtney followed with a single of her own. Sears drove Rodriguez home after a wild pitch moved the runners up a base. The Knights then put the game away in the bottom of the third with five runs on five hits to take an 11-1 lead. Albright got a pair of singles in the next two innings before the game ended after the top of the fifth inning. Courtney and Robertson each went 2-of-2 from the plate. Sears was saddled with the loss again after allowing 11 runs (seven earned) on 10 hits with two strikeouts and three walks. Grant pitched in relief again and allowed just one hit in 1.1 innings of work. Knights pitcher Kylee Schwind earned the win after allowing one earned run on six hits, and struck out four batters.
