READING, Pa. – The Albright softball team swept King's in a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday afternoon, defeating the Monarchs, 6-1 and 3-2.
In game one, King's took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second, but the Lions mounted a strong response in the bottom half.
Nora Harrison doubled to lead off the inning, and
Armida Roman reached on an infield single. Two batters later,
Abigail Lord homered to left to make it 3-1 Albright. After two outs,
Brooke Yerger scored to make it 4-1 on a
Kelly Cembrale single.
Albright added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. Lord picked up her fourth RBI of the game with a run-scoring single to bring Roman home to make it 5-1. Yerger followed later in the inning with a sacrifice fly to score
Corinne Garuffe to make it 6-1.
Riley Gerenda pitched a great game, allowing just one run on three hits in a complete game performance. Cembrale, Roman and Lord each had two hits to lead the Lions' offense in game one.
Albright got all three of its runs in the second inning of game two. Consecutive singles from
Regina Milburn, Garuffe and Cembrale loaded the bases.
Jordan Chell walked in a run to make it 1-0, and Yerger doubled in two more runs after two outs to make it 3-0 Albright.
King's got one of those runs back in the top of the third inning, and it stayed that way until the top of the seventh inning. King's had runners on second and third after a single and a double after an out. That forced
Camille Sears from the circle in favor of Gerenda. An RBI single made it 3-2 with runners at the corners with one out, but a bunt attempt was popped up for the second out. A pop out to second ended the game with the Lions earning the sweep.
Sears was very good in the circle. She pitched 6.1 innings, allowing two runs on four hits with just one earned run against.
Albright's Sunday doubleheader at Wesley has been postponed due to Wesley's scheduling of a conference makeup date. Albright returns to action next Wednesday against Alvernia at home. First game of the doubleheader begins at 3 p.m.
